Sea Lion Saltwater Spinning Reel

The SL-40 model Sea Lion holds over 200 yards of 8-pound-test line.

Fishing in saltwater can mean a lot of surprises. Stories abound of anglers describing the huge fish they hung while fishing for smaller fish. That's one of the draws for saltwater fishing -- you never know what you will catch. This scenario demands that you have a reel capable of holding a lot of line and handling a lot of fish. Offshore Anglers' Sea Lion series spinning reels offer both advantages.

Take the line capacity for example. The SL-40 model holds over 200 yards of 8-pound-test line. While fishing for seatrout, a big striper takes the bait and runs. The fight is on, but you can confidently play the fish because you have plenty of line.

These reels are built tough for tough-fighting fish. The simple gearing mechanism with three critical ball bearings mean there will be no mechanical failure. Reels with complicated gearing systems tend to be prone to more failure. Not this reel!

The Sea Lion SL-40 comes with a 4.9 to 1 gear ratio. That means that for every complete turn of the handle, the spool turns 4.9 revolutions. For spinning reels, this is a fast retrieve. Catching up to a speeding fish running straight at you is no problem for this one.

And, the PowerLock instant anti-reverse system keeps the spool solidly in place while fighting that big fish, allowing the drag system to work for you.

A 6-disc drag means that bigger fish can smoothly pull line from the reel while running -- no jerks and jolts from an undersized drag. Most anglers say that more big fish are lost because of an inefficient drag than anything else.

Rated for line from 8 to 17 pound test, the SL-40 can fit many fishing requirements. Larger sizes of the Sea Lion series can handle line up to 30-pound test. There is a size to fit almost any saltwater fishing need.

Components on the SL series reels are stainless steel. This feature is important when you realize that saltwater corrosion is responsible for most equipment failures. The stainless steel holds up better than any other metal for strength and durability. Couple the stainless component parts with the SL's graphite frame, and you have a reel that is almost impervious to saltwater damage.

The large bail comes with an oversized roller and is easy to operate. Its size quickly picks up line for retrieval, a feature that goes unnoticed by many anglers. It can be manually operated or automatically closed with a turn of the handle.

One feature that pleases more anglers than almost anything else is the large handle grip. This handle grip will not slip from your hand during a fight. It is large enough to grab with your whole hand, something that gives you the confidence that "this one won't get away".

SL Series reels are easily disassembled for cleaning and lubricating, and the handle can be changed from right to left hand use in a matter of seconds.

This is a great spinning reel for almost any saltwater application short of offshore big game scenarios. It is built well, made with quality components, and really priced right. Probably more important than anything else -- it works really well!
