Fishing in general has been taken almost by storm by the urge to catch more fish on light tackle. Even offshore anglers are opting for the smaller, lighter rods and reels. Having the right rod makes a difference when landing big fish on light tackle.
Offshore Angler is meeting that light tackle challenge with its Light Tackle Series Spinning Rod and Reel Combos. These rigs are designed to handle from 6 pound test line to as high as 30 pound test line with a fast, light action tip.
The fast taper on the rod tip allows anglers to make long casts while still having plenty of backbone when a big striper decides to take line. And, at up to 7 feet in length, it is long enough to keep line out of the water on any long runs a big fish may make. The more line in the water, the more drag on the line and the more likely you are to be broken off. Being able to lift high and keep line out of the water is important.
Designed to handle some offshore and near shore fishing, this outfit can be used inshore as well. For seatrout, flounder or fluke, this rig will fit the bill. The IM7 blank used in the rods is the highest grade graphite. The blank design provides a heavy backbone in the butt section that tapers to a fast tip — a perfect combination for casting smaller baits while being able to fight bigger fish.
The Ocean Master Light Tackle Series rods have hypolon handles, which provide a soft touch on the hands, and make it a comfortable rod during the fight. The extra large rubber butt cap makes a long, standing fight easier to handle. The size of the butt cap allows you to place it in your midsection as you fight the fish. Many light tackle rods do not come with this butt cap and are modified by anglers after the fact. Offshore Angler has made it a part of every Ocean Master rod in the Light tackle Series.
The guides on this Ocean Master are Fuji guides made with acrylic ring inserts. The acrylic provides a smooth surface for the line and will not cause frays or burns in your line. The guides are sized to allow for long casts, taking advantage of proper guide spacing and size reduction toward the tip. Guides that are too small will hamper casting. Guides that are too large make the rod bulky and cumbersome to handle.
Bass Pro Shops has coupled these rods with a variety of Ocean Master Spinning Reels for the combo. This makes it an ideally matched rig for stripers, fluke, red drum, seatrout, cobia and any other near-shore species. Offshore, the combos do well on smaller bottom fish, like sea bass and vermillion snapper. And just in case a bigger fish comes along, the Ocean Master spinning reels have the guts to fight it out with them if needed.
