Turkey hunters are often afflicted with the "tinkering bug." They can't resist constantly messing with their equipment. They're always trying to make their gear better. Combine that with the urge of all turkey hunters to shoot tight patterns out of their shotguns and you've got a never-ending search for the perfect shotgun pattern.

We'll, I'd like to say the quest will always be out of our reach and we'll always be able to tinker with our guns chokes and shells, but that may no longer be the case. The introduction of Hevi-Shot has put a spin on the future of turkey hunting. Remington is now loading the Hevi-Shot in several different turkey loads to fit the needs of all kinds of hunters. The Hevi-Shot is a stellar performer in turkey shotguns and the patterns speak for themselves.

I've been a turkey hunter for a long time. I've tried countless chokes and lead turkey loads in my quest for the ultimate pattern, and I was never satisfied until a few weeks ago. I thought it was time to give Hevi-Shot a try and picked up a box and a H.S Strut Undertaker HS Choke Tube.

The Undertaker HS is specially designed for top performance when used with Hevi-Shot loads. The choke is field-tested for optimum diameter producing super full choke patterns. It puts an amazing 90-percent of the shot in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards.

The Remington Hevi-Shot Turkey Loads are known in their own right for routinely achieving patterns in excess of 90 percent. Since the shot material is made of an alloy of tungsten, nickel, and iron, it has a higher density than lead. That's important for several reasons -- first it's heavier than lead so it carries more energy downrange, its also harder than lead and shoots much tighter patterns.

When I paired these two in my shotgun and sat down for a morning of test patterning, I didn't expect the kind of results I got on my first shot. The patterning board was riddled with holes at 40 yards and I put 16 pellets through the brain and vertebra. That's not even counting the many other pellets that passed through the head and neck without clipping vitals. It was the first time ever I'd seen a pattern that was so tight at 40 yards. It compared more to a 25-yard pattern by the looks of it.

The rest of the morning proved to be a repeat of the first shot. The patterns were amazing and kept a tight group farther than any lead I've ever shot. The Undertaker choke and the Remington Hevi-Shot made an amazing combination. They far surpassed any lead I've ever unleashed from my shotgun. It was proof enough for me to switch to Hevi-Shot without batting an eye. I'll go into the woods with more confidence in my shotgun and it's capabilities than ever before.  Price:  $19.99 (Undertaker), $16.99-$24.99 (Hevi-Shot).
