Hiking, backpacking and kayaking trips require a minimal amount of gear without sacrificing convenience. The people who go on these excursions are always in search of lighter and smaller camping equipment to make their trips easier and more enjoyable. These people are the types of campers who grew up with a Swiss Army Knife in their pocket and wore out more Superman sleeping bags growing up then they did shoes.

If you are one of those people, as I am, then you probably already own the Mountain Safety Research (MSR) Whisperlite Shaker Jet Stove, or have at least heard of it. And if you don't own one, then you're definitely missing out.

The MSR Whisperlite Shaker Jet Stove has long been a favorite of the avid backpacker, and for good reasons it's extremely lightweight, at 14 ounces, and folds into a package small enough to fit into a cargo pocket.

The Shaker Jet Stove is built specifically for the backpacker, but is perfect for anyone who wants an extremely lightweight stove. I've owned the stove for around two years, and it never gets left behind on an outdoor excursion. I even take it on day-long canoeing trips, as it easily fits in my fanny pack with a can of Chef Boyardee for a quick and easy hot meal.

The stove is constructed of stainless steel with brass fittings and high-density plastic. The fuel tube is made of woven flex steel so that it can be wrapped around the foldable stove for storage. This makes for a very lightweight, but durable stove, and I've never had any problems with mine before. I've had it crammed in some fairly tight spots, but it has never bent or broken.

With a 22-ounce fuel bottle (sold separately), the MSR Whisperlite Shaker Jet Stove will run about 1 1/2 hours, give or take a few minutes. And since the stove cooks things very quickly (1 liter of water boils in 3.9 minutes), 80-something minutes will last through those extending backpacking trips. And cleanup is easy all you have to do is shake the stove, and its ready for your next trip.

The stove burns white gas and only takes about 15 pumps on the primer to get it ready. And for those windy cooking days, the Whisperlite also comes with thick aluminum foil wind guard that folds up to the size of a credit card.

If you really like backpacking or canoeing, I would recommend this stove to you. It's no accident that its one of the most popular backpacking stoves in the industry it has more than proven its ability to endure harsh camping conditions and keep on working. Plus, you never have to worry about replacing the whole stove if something breaks, because every part is replaceable but I've never had to worry about that.
