                                        Bass Pro Shops Conservation Marathon

Springfield, MO
Sunday, November 1, 2009

Course Map – Click here
Good News – Our marathon and half marathon course will remain the same as last year thanks to the cooperation of  Missouri Dept Of Transportation (MODOT) and the contractor, Archer Western. Major construction work is taking place at the Highway 60/65 interchange (Lone Pine/James River Bridge trail area as well as the area which parallels 65 Highway to the Gasconade overpass).  MODOT is creating a temporary running surface at the trail/construction areas and will be clearing equipment away from the trail for the marathon. They have arranged for us to use the Galloway Creek Greenway trail for the one day only on Nov 1 to honor their commitment for the marathon for this year.   The trail will be closed immediately following the run to resume heavy duty work on the interchange. We are working on some exciting changes for next year’s course while they work on new highway interchanges that will heavily impact this trail. Thanks MODOT!!!

Just to let you know . . .  with the MODOT work on the trail in the area that they will be hard compacting, if a heavy rain occurs this week, it may be muddy, so expect to possibly get a little dirty. Thanks.

Starting and finishing at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, the course will take runners out onto streets of Springfield and onto two of Southwest Missouri's finest greenway trails. This is a unique natural setting, separated from the road and following South Creek and Galloway Creek - safe and scenic paths for a large portion marathon and half marathon course.

WALKERS ARE WELCOME!!!  Run or walk, we will be there to the end with you!!!

Music and Entertainment will make this a fun run with numerous aid stations along route, all competing to get your vote for the best ambassadors at making your run a great experience.

Course:
The marathon course has had some reconfiguration due to trails being affecting by highway construction around Hwy 65 and 60.  We have made some revisions to the course that have made it better than ever!!  The course is fairly flat with a few hills and we got rid of some out and back trail that we had in the previous years.  The course still follows some great scenic trails on the Ozark Greenway system, Springfield neighborhoods and parks.   We will be posting this new map very soon.  (The half marathon course will remain the same as last year.)

Music, aid stations and sports drink will be available. The marathon course is USATF certified and a Boston Marathon qualifier.  No unauthorized vehicles including baby carriages, in-line skates, roller skates, skate boards, bicycles, etc. will be allowed on the course.

Course Time Limit – course open 8 hours: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Timing for Marathon, Half Marathon - Chronotrack will be used to time these events. The system utilizes a light-weight disposable timing tag. The “D-tag” will record a runner’s official time, beginning when a participant crosses the start line and concluding as he or she passes the finish, as well as split time at the half way point on the course. One of the great features of this system is that there is no chip recovery!! This system has been used in many popular events such as San Francisco Marathon, New York Nike Human Race, Rock N Roll Half Marathon Virginia Beach, Chicago Half Marathon and the Marine Corp Marathon.

Weather Conditions: Like most other places the weather in Missouri is pretty unpredictable. The temperature at the start of both race days will generally be in the low 40's Fahrenheit and can climb into the low 60's Fahrenheit by noon.  However, we strongly suggest you be prepared for any kind of weather.  Warning: Inadequate training and disregard for the importance of taking fluids have resulted in life threatening conditions, such as heat stroke both in experienced and first time runners. It is recommended all runners take fluids at each of our Aid Stations.

Medical Attention/massage therapy: Medical coverage consist of physicians, EMT's and athletic trainer stations at the start, finish and along the course at the aid stations.  The main Medical Tent is located at the Finish Line with St. John's Sports Medicine team there to assist you with recovery.  There are also massage therapists both before and after the run volunteering their services to help relax and loosen up tight muscles.

Safe Spectator locations (for marathon and half marathon) : -
National and Sunset at McDaniel Park – Bass Pro sets on the corner of Sunshine and Campbell. From the store, take Sunshine to the east (approximately 1 mile) to National and go south. Watch for the park on the right (approximately ½ mile). Park is on National and Sunset but drive into the park is before Sunset.
