Rated 4 out of 5Â by RebelsWingman Great for catfishing
This reel was made for catfishing, it's durable and cheap enough. Easy to cast and preforms well. Quality does leave something to desire.

I have had 2 of these reels for over 5 years now. I mostly pier fish, and have caught black drum, red drum, flounder, sheepshead, bluefish, small sharks and rays. The reels have been up to the task. The only problem has been after a few years the spools showed light corrosion. A quick call to zebco and I had 2 stainless steel spools, problem solved! i have had no problems with the drag, as others have reported. I do wish they were the same size as the original 808's. these are big reels!

I own 5 Zebco Pro Staff 888's and plan on buying a couple more. I reccomend to not use line heavier then 20lbs. For best performance use 15-17 lb line.

Im lookin at the 808sw and now I see this 888, but it does not have the sw designation.Answers
A:Â
I use mine in salt water, The spools did start to corrode after a while, but you can replace them with stainless spools from Zebco.A:Â
I can't answer this question because the 808sw is designated for sw and the 888 is not, I think as long as you clean it up after use it shouldn't matter.A:Â
as far as I know this is not for salt waterTop 100 Contributor
A:Â
It is not rated for saltwater. Stay with a reel with the SW rating. The power and line capacity of the 808 and the 888 are almost identical anyway.A:Â
the 888 is a great salt water reel but find the older version with the star drag system on the handle.the knob drag system on the new 888 is the same junky one used for the 808 and it cant handle big fish.
also the 888 has a better gear ratio then the 808's
