Rated 5 out of 5 by Great present I gave this to someone as a gift and they absolutely loved it! Very pleased with the value! March 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great purchase This is a great reel for the price, the rod is okay but you can pair this reel with any decent rod and have akiller combo. This reel will out fish $ 200.00 spinning reels if you throw sot plastics. the 6.3.1 gear ratio is exactly the right speed for bass.it handles worms,brushhogs.craws.kreature baits anything plastic. The rod however will cause you to miss hook-ups because it has no backbone, change rods and you are ready to go. 5 stars for the reel all-day long. Good for Bay fishing with stronger line, I reline with 20lb test upon arrival. I would say it would be great for a average 12 year old. If he/she is small and never cast before, the number eleven Zebco reel would be better with a ultra-light rod just for learning. When I was a kid just learning. I practiced in the yard with a heavy dummy lure (no hooks) and this got me ready to be around others.

Best rod and reel I can think of for a 12 year old, great for beginners and adults alike. Should do well under bay fishing conditions.

A:
You might be able to put heavier line on it, but if you're going to go with much heavier line (17-20 pound test or higher) it'd be better to go with the Zebco733, which is made to handle that heavier line.
