Rated 1 out of 5 by DON'T BUY My brother and I both got this combo thinking since Bill Dance's name was on it that it must be somewhat reliable. Well don't make the same mistake we did. After a month my brother's start to run loudly and it was difficult to reel. We took it apart to find the gears were stripped. We returned it to Bass Pro and got a new one with a different colored tip maybe they had fixed the issue because it has run smoothly for about two months now. Mine has started to have the same problems his did though so I see a trip to Bass Pro for a new one in the near future. I don't care how much you pay for a combo I think it should work for at least 4 months. The rods on both work fine but you buy a combo so you can use both the reel and the rod. Overall I'm not happy with this purchase. July 30, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by JUNK Bought this rod and reel combo, thought it was awesome at first, then the string gets caught up in the top bell, and you have to take the reel apart and unwind the string, cut it off, then restring it only for it to happen again, also when you cast it the line will get hung up in the reel and not cast very far. If I was Bill Dance I'd get my name off this item. September 21, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by disappointed kid I bought this rod and reel combo for my 11 year old for our annual fishing trip as an upgrade from his previous set. The reviews said that it is reliable rod and reel but after 1 day of fishing the line was tangled in the reel and even after restringing it the reel would not draw in the line. My boy was disappointed and it was no fun to take a kid fishing with a rig that breaks right away. I have been fishing all my life and never had a rod and reel break this easily. No more Zebco anything for me---no more Bill Dance stuff for that matter either. August 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by good purchase Got this for my wife who is my fishing partner. This one makes 5 zebco 33 that i have bought from Bass Pro. in the last few years. Some i have rigged for bream and some for crappie. June 7, 2013

Good for Bay fishing with stronger line, I reline with 20lb test upon arrival. I would say it would be great for a average 12 year old. If he/she is small and never cast before, the number eleven Zebco reel would be better with a ultra-light rod just for learning. When I was a kid just learning. I practiced in the yard with a heavy dummy lure (no hooks) and this got me ready to be around others.

Best rod and reel I can think of for a 12 year old, great for beginners and adults alike. Should do well under bay fishing conditions.

You might be able to put heavier line on it, but if you're going to go with much heavier line (17-20 pound test or higher) it'd be better to go with the Zebco733, which is made to handle that heavier line.
