Winchester Razorback XT Centerfire Ammo
This ammo is the best shooting ammo so far out of my AR-15 with a 1:9 twist barrel this ammo was made for the slower twising barrels because of the bullet weights are heavier and they stabilize the heavier grain bullet better than your faster twist model 70 with a 1:12 twist rate. It did a number on a Floridia hog. They group the size of a dime at 150 yards. At 200 yards they open up to a 1/2" so if your trying to shoot these round out of a bolt gun make sure you know your twist rate is a 1:7 to 1:9 any thing faster will not stabilize this round and they are all over the place when sighting them in. These ARE NOT MADE FOR A FAST TWIST BARREL HIGHER THAN 1:9.

first off if 1:9 twist is much faster than 1:12 what the twist is saying is the it makes one full turn in 12" of the barrel 1:9 makes one full turn in 9"

I usually use full metal jacket ammunition with my .223. It is very accurate. I wanted a bullet that would mushroom, but retain its weight. I felt it would be better for deer. The Razorback XT seemed like it would meet that need. I read an article in The American Hunter magazine. They said the bullets were intended for AR type rifles and were quite accurate in them. I have a Winchester model 70 Featherweight in .223. I tried the Razorback shells and was shocked. Some bullets didn,t hit an 8 inch target at 100 yards. I moved the target back to 50 yards. About 25% hit . within 2 inches of the bullseye. The rest hit high or low by as much as a foot. Left and right wasn,t as bad. Some hit the sod below the target. I shot some full metal jackets and they were in the bullseye. The biggest problem is Razorbacks shoot so inconsistently. I thought it was me at first. But shooting the full metal jackets were consistently in the black. I used 5 inch green Poplar for a backing on the target. The bullets that hit the target blew through the wood with ease. They do penatrate well. If they hit the target. Now I don,t know anything about barrel twist, but I know different guns have a faster twist to make them more accurate. Maybe the short barrels on AR type rifles do shoot this shell accurately?? But my Model 70 does not. Maybe they were designed for AR type rifles because they have 20 round magazines, and if you don,t hit anything with the first round, you have 19 more to blaze away????? I used the whole 20 rounds up. So I gave them a fair trial. 25% hitting near the target isn,t good enough to hunt with. The chance at a deer is too important to lose because of bad ammunition. I,ve never had to worry about ammunition not performing before. The concept of a barnes type bullet for a .223 still interests me. But, it has to be accurate.
