William Joseph™ Retractable Stripping Basket
William Joseph's Retractable Stripping Basket
I purchased the William Joseph's Retractable Stripping Basket this Spring when I was unable to find my old stripping basket. I looked locally for one and Bass Pro Shops was the only store with a stripping basket & the William Joseph's Retractable Stripping Basket was the only stopping basket they had for sale.
At first the only thing I didn't like about it was the large "William Joseph" on the stopping basket. I don't want people thinking I was William Joseph and I didn't want to advertise their products for free!
After using it a short while I took my fly fishing rod, reel, stripping basket to a local fly shop because my line kept getting tangled up in my stripping basket making casting impossible. We determined the problem was the design of the stripping basket. It did not have anything in the bottom of the basket to keep wind from tangling my line. I fly fish exclusively in Salt Water where there is always wind blowing. This basket may be okay for fresh water fly fishing where wind is not a big factor, but for Salt Water Fly Fishing it is basically worthless!
For those of you that also didn't like the William Joseph in large letters on the stripping basket buy yourself a Sharpee marker and color in the gray letters to remove the William Joseph name from your basket!

One of a kind
I ordered this product because here in Brazil we don't have anything similar. My girlfriend said it's kinda funny that I could carry a baby in it. But it's really useful and works just fine. The only thing I would change is that big William Joseph written on the front, some folks asked me if that's my name.

Really enjoying this product. i use it bank fishing at a small lake so when i move along the bank the line is in the basket not dragging along the ground or getting tangeled under my feet. it's worked very good so far.

Good quality, bad design for me
I bought this for wade fishing the Texas coast...but quickly realized that it is not going to work for me.
If you're like me, you strip downward at a 45-degree angle, with your hand stopping around mid-thigh. This basket sits on your hip, so I had to use my entire arm to strip "back" instead of "down"...which wore me out very quickly!
Also, most of the water that we wade it at least mid-thigh deep, so it would be hanging in the water, defeating the purpose.
Its a well built product, very sturdy, and a handy design...and could certainly make life easier for some folks....just not for my style of fishing.
