I picked this up to replace a reel for an old 4 wt. rod I own. I looked it over and compared it to $150.00 and $ 200.00 counterparts and figured "Why not! It could always be a backup." Keeping in mind it's the rod and line that count, and the reel is just a "line keeper," I did not have any worries. The first time I used this reel, I hooked into an 8 lb. Brown that I wasn't expecting. I had no choice but to use the reel. It worked fantasticly. The trip went on all day and the reel was flawless. No, it's not machined aluminum, but it also does not come at machined aluminum prices. Most trout fishing does not require more then this reel offers. I see no need to replace it. I will definately keep White River reels in the run for my future dollars. I highly recommend this, especially if you know it's not really the reel that matters.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Dan8trout white metal doesn't hold up
I purchased this reel as a back up for a Elk Creek Pa Steelhead trip this past November. I had a couple of hook-ups with some cromey's landing my first two but had issues with the reel on my third fish.
The problem was the front seat of the base that attaches me rod broke off. The fish I had on was approx 8 lbs.
I notice it was white metal.

I picked one of these up as part of a TFO Sig II fly rod combo. I had every intention of looking the reel over, then selling it and get something *better* to go with the TFO rod. However, once I received it, I couldn't get over the build quality and overall fit and finish, especially for a 50 dollar reel. It looks like White River redesigned these recently and I'm very impressed. I'll definitely keep it and barring any future issues, have it in my arsenal for many years to come. All metal construction with a disc drag, and the only real point of failure that I see possible would be the one way bearing, and even then it's very accessible to change out. It's a keeper!

I was looking for a cheap reel to replace my Pflueger that I want to retire. And I can say I couldn’t be more pleased. I tell ya, for the money, it’s the best I have found. I have definitely been thrifty when it comes to most of my fishing gear but this truly doesn’t fit the mold of thrifty. Low cost but definitely quality. I use it for trout, pan fish, bass, and even have used it for Muskie and Pike. It’s light weight but sturdy and performs excellently. I haven’t noticed any wear related to rust and it performs well with the minimum maintenance expected on any reel.
