One of the most rewarding experiences in fly fishing is catching a fish on a fly of your own creation. To help you reach that goal, the folks at White River Fly Shop® have created this series of fly-tying kits that include everything you'll need to learn how to tie your favorite flies - including a FREE instructional DVD featuring Lefty Kreh! In this kit, you'll find high-quality tools, vise, hooks, and materials, all carefully selected to make your introduction to fly tying simple and enjoyable. The bass fly kit provides material and DVD instruction for tying the following patterns: Bendback Streamer, Lefty's Deceiver, Clouser Deep Minnow (baby bass), Lefty's Popping Bug, Hackle Fly (seducer), Deer Hair Diver (frog), and Deer Hair Popper (frog).

A Great Purchase and Hobby! I've been having a blast with this kit! All of the tools you need to get started in fly tying are included as well as a very ample amount of materials. The instructional video is top-notch and the instructor is very easy to follow. I've made all of the flies from the video and I am including a photo of a collection of some of my own patterns I've created since then. It's a great hobby for any fishing enthusiast and this kit is fantastic, I highly recommend this as a purchase for yourself or as a gift for any of your fellow anglers! January 19, 2011
Where are the labels While the kit appears to be comprehensive, the materials aren't labled. Everything is packaged in small plastic bags with no identification. For a beginner who doesn't know the difference between a bucktail or a hackle, this is a major oversight. The video is good but still assumes a little too much for the beginner. For example, attaching the thread to the hook is not mentioned. Users might want to know that the media is a VHS cassette, not a DVD. The vice is adquate but not a rotating model. No whip finish tool is included but the video does demonstrate a method of finishing by hand. All in all, a good start but I wouldn't purchase it again knowing what I know now. The package might be a good deal but I can't really tell since I don't what the materials are or their value. I'll have to take the kit back to the store and get some help in identifying the contents. Simply adding labels to the envelopers would make this a much better value for the neophyt fly tier. Lefty's favorites well presented There are some issues with this kit that prevent it from getting a 5 star rating..... The VHS tape is definately misrepresented in the add as being a DVD, It is a VHS tape, so be aware. I have made all the represented streamers, but the quantity of material is not adequate to make more than one example of most of them. The hackle feathers demonstrated by Lefty are not included in the kit, and you have to improvise a substitute "on the fly" so to speak. The black bucktail is definately inadequate by the time you get to the famous "Deciever" as the included piece was very short and small. I would not include this kit in the beginner category, as you really need some basic skills in addition to those presented here, such as basic knots & hook selection. The Fly tying vise included is not bad, but most people who will use this kit will already have a better one so it is somewhat of a waste. I would rather see a vise base, or more materials included. On the good side, Lefty's video is excellent. He tosses out some little suggestions and tips that you would not get in a book. The flys he demonstrates are the true classics, and you can not get good instructions on most of them from readily available sources. Just the video is worth most of the price of this kit. At $3 to $5 per example, the retail value of the completed flys when done would be about equal to the total cost of the kit, so the video and the tools are basically free. It is hard to complain about that kind of deal. The tools included could get you started, and they make good additions if you already have a minimal selection of bobbins & such. After purchasing this kit, I would pick up additional black & white hackle feathers & more black bucktail at the same time. I would probably also get some different size hooks to make additional streamer sizes. July 27, 2007
Great price! When I read the other reviews before ordering, I accepted the faults they listed. I am happy to say that all of the issues previously noted appear to be fixed- my kit was on back order and the one I received has the DVD, not a VHS and all of the materials are labeled just as shown in the pic. Also, the vise appears to be flimsy in the pic, but in reality the vise is very stout! As someone else said, the video is worth the price alone and all in all I would have to say this is a great value for the money. The one additional thing that I had to order was a whip finisher. The entire kit comes in a tidy little box with everything you need to start tying flies. The vise is a clamp style with enough adjustment built into it to attatch to almost any table or work bench. the quality of the kit is top notch and the value is great! You'll really enjoy this kit, mine is almost 2 years old and still works like new after tying more than a thousand flies!

Short answer - No. Not unless you take the hook out of the vise and re-set your "grip angle"

A:
No, once the fly is clamped, the angle is static. Rotating will change the angle of the fly or loosen the jaws. This is not a rotary vise.

This kit comes with a lot of material! I've tied all of the flies in the instructional video and have made a dozen more patterns of my own, and still have enough material to tie many, MANY more! You'll be very pleased with everything in this kit and it'll keep you busy for a very long time!

The kit includes enough material for most people to tie plenty of flies. I suggest enlarging the image and comparing the material packs with the DVD to see if there is enough for what you want to do.
