Rated 5 out of 5 by power i received this in the 8 wt for christmas for bass pike and surf fishing. it has good casting power and is excellent in bringing fish in. it is very accuurratte. i am only 14 and taught myself to fly fish at 11. this is a very good rod you should try it out May 21, 2009
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great For Beginners, Great for a Backup! A friend of mine began to give me lessons on fly fishing on a White River Classic Combo. After I got the feel for it, I was hooked. I traveled to my nearest BPS later that week and bought this rod and the matching Dogwood Canyon reel. After returning home, I began to fish our favorite stream and caught 21 Horneyhead chubs and 2 trout that first day! My spinning combo has aways been an attention getter, but this rod is every bit of the same quality I paid for as my favorite spinning combo. The action is great, and its very comfortable... even after hours of fishing. If you're on the fence of entering the new world of fly fishing, buy this! You won't regret it! I surely don't, even after a year later and after fishing with friends combos that cost 3 times as much, I honestly feel that this rod and reel combo is the same quality as the big boys! Thanks BPS! Rated 5 out of 5 by affordable rod 8 years ago I stopped fishing for some reasons. Before I quite fishing, I used several expensive fly rods ranging from orvis to sage. These days I re-started fishing and needed new outfits to spare them (plus: they are almost wore out). As I didn't like to waste money anymore and searched for a reasonable takle. Finally I found this model. Actually I didn't expect these rods for the price, so I tried to purchase only #6 & #8 models. After I got them, I went to the sea to try out how they work. Believe it or not, I was so amazed when I easily cast full line thanks to the slow action. These models are so appropriately designed for the re-entering fisher like me. Also this model can be a perfect gateway for beginners. If you pay only approx. 60$, you can easily learn what fly casting is. This is amazing! I highly recommend Dogwood Canyon to everyone. Don't ask me how much fishes I caught with these rods, good tackle and good fishing are absolutely different. ps; BPS must store more qty. These models are so frequently out of stock when I want to buy further. April 2, 2009
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great All Around Combo I purchased this outfit about 4 years ago as an upgrade from my old combo. I can tell you I live in Branson and I fish with this rod below the Tablerock Dam. Somedays I'll catch 20 trout on this outfit from nymphing to drifting a dry fly down the current. This rod covers it all. This is a great quality, durable fly reel and it comes at a great price. The line and backing are also great quality and easy to cast. Even for beginners. May 16, 2008

New to fly fishing wondering why the 9' rod has so many choices of line weight? Is it the size of the eyes?

A:
Line weight determines the size of load the rod will carry. A 4wt. rod that is 9 ft. long is suited for small flies, whereas a 8 wt. rod in the same length would be adequate for tossing large flies for bass, salmon/steelhead, etc.

A:
The 9’ rods will have 10 or 11 guides, including tip. Fly fishing is a bit different than conventional, in that the line weight is the primary element, rather than the length.

You first choose the line weight of your outfit based upon what type of fishing you’ll be doing.

If you’ll be fishing for panfish or trout, look at line weights from 4-6.

If you are going straight to bass, a 7 or 8 weight is better because it will deliver bigger flies and control bigger fish around cover.

An 8-1/2 to 9 foot length is average for most fishing. If you’re going to fish smaller streams with lots of overhanging trees, that’s when you might want to look at a shorter length.

Your size has virtually nothing to do with selection of an appropriate rod/line weight or length. Rod/line wt. selection should be based on the size of flies to be used, along with size of fish pursued. Rod length is a subjective decision but usually a 9 ft. rod will be best for a variety of conditions.

Size is not all that important when it comes to fly fishing. It is all about timing and technique. With a little practice you could handle any rod from 7' to 15'. Depending on where you intend to do most of your fishing an 8' or 8'6" 5 to 7 weight rod should fit about any venue on freshwater (and some brackish water as well).
