This rod is perfect. For the small investment it is sensitive yet durable. It is perfect for a first time buyer who wants to get started in a wonderful sport.

I got the 7' 6" 5 weight combo this last december, and i have had a good # of trout on it. This rod has not the best rod action but is great for a beginner to novice. I do not recomend this rod for big rivers or anywhere you have to cast a long distance, the action just does not allow you to cast very far. The overhand cast is about the best cast you can do on it. The roll cast is alright. But like I said I only use this rod for small streams or where ever you don't have to cast very far. Good fishin' to ya', hope you catch a big one! Note: I paid $84.99 for this rod, so $54.99 is a great value.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Skewl Great Beginner's Rod
I just started fly fishing last season and this rod is the sole reason that I have grown to love the sport. The rod is very forgiving, which is extremely important for a beginning caster. Also, this rod breaks down into 2 sections, which makes it easy to pack in a car for a trip, with no loss of performance. It looks very sleek, too, another bonus. Overall, any beginning fly fisher would be wise to buy this rod because it is inexpensive, beautiful and above all performs great.

Size is not all that important when it comes to fly fishing. It is all about timing and technique. With a little practice you could handle any rod from 7' to 15'. Depending on where you intend to do most of your fishing an 8' or 8'6" 5 to 7 weight rod should fit about any venue on freshwater (and some brackish water as well).A:Â
