I purchased the 6'9" Classic rod with a Classic 3-4 reel and really love this outfit. I use it primarily for bluegill fishing but have landed several bass - largest approx 2 lbs- and the rod handled everthing with ease. This is also a great small trout rod.
This short rod takes a bit to get used to if you are fly casting challanged but nothing an hour or two of backyard practice wouldn't cure.
The reel is a nice piece of machined aluminum that works flawlessly. The rod tube makes a nice case for carrying the rod to remote locations.

I recently purchased this fly rod to use while wading the small creeks and rivers of North Alabama. I took it out for the first time on my favorite creek and had a blast. I had a hard time turning over big poppers so I went to a wooly bugger and an upside down bream killer. I caught several nice bream and a couple of smallmouth. The best fish was a 14 inch smallmouth caught in water up to my waist. The fish had room to go deep and fighting this fish on a small rod was a thrill that I will want to repeat.

The Classic Ultralight 5' 3wt fly rod is ideal for those of us who fish small, brush-choked mountain streams for trout. Having made numerous 4' one-piece rods for small stream fly fishing for myself and friends, I particularly enjoy having this three-piece rod that stows easily and still gives me the short length I need to fish the small, enclosed streams in central Pennsylvania. Not much casting is involved in this kind of trout fishing and the three weight line works well for dappling and dunking dry flies or nymphs.

I purchased the 5'8" 4 wt, and have been quite happy with it. I have two Sage TXL rods (6'3" 3 wt and 7' 3 wt) and though this rod won't quite compete on a level basis with either of those, it's a great alternative at a MUCH lower price. The quality is excellent and it's a great little package, with the amber velour logoed rod bag and zippered and logoed rod tube. I've cast my 5'8" with both 4 wt and 3 wt lines, and it does a great job with either. If there's a bit of wind, you definitely need to go with the 4 wt, for which it's rated. I can easily cast 30-40 feet with a SA Ultra 4 double taper, but up close I prefer the Sage QDT 3 wt or the older Sage QT WF 3 line. The rod is somewhat soft with just a touch of backbone, which allows it to load well with a 3 wt. The short length is a big plus in situations where it's just about impossible to cast (brushy, tiny streams) and for this purpose, this rod does every bit as well as the 6'3" TXL...unless you hook a big fish. The TXL has a lot more backbone! This said, for 7-12" trout or panfish, this is plenty of rod! The rod has a cork seat and handle with slip rings, which is perfect for a small rod such as this. My only complaint would be for a shorter seat - the one on the rod is a little large. Also, Bass Pro, you need to put a cork and ring seat and handle on your short 3 weight Classic fly rod! The huge locking handle on your 6'3" 3 weight classic is ridiculously big for such a tiny rod and defeats the purpose of such a rod. All your ultralights should come with cork and ring seats! Just my two cents worth! Your 5'8" 4 wt is a great little stick for the money and highly recommended!
