White River Fly Shop Black Watch Switch Fly Rods
Pretty good deal
I recently bought this rod not knowing anything about it except what was said in the previous review. I purchased it in the local Bass Pro and was excited. The rod tip is around medium fast action and I bought Rio Switch Line to go with it. My budget was small, so since I bought the 7wt rod, I went with the 7/8 switch line and a 7/8 Hobbs Creek reel. Really should go with a 9wt reel so there's plenty space for the head of the line. The rod performed great when I first got it. I was able to launch 70' casts quite easily and caught quite a few trout. I even caught a real nice brown. The rod is very comfortable and easy to handle and performed great! I decided to put on Rio Grip Shooter and Elixer V2 switch Scandi head. Both are suited for the rod. However, doing some simple roll casts in the yard, the rod snapped in half. My thought quickly went to the first and only review I've seen on this rod. I called the store and they have another one waiting for me. I want to believe that it was a defect like the other person experienced. We'll see how the replacement does on the river in the morning. I'm confident it will perform quite well.

Value Value Value
To be completely candid I got this rod as a gift and it broke on the first roll cast. Bass Pro was stellar with sending out another and it appears as though the first one just had a defect in the blank. I got this rod primarily for the Salmon River (King Salmon and Steelhead) and Lake George/Lake Champlain landlocked salmon and lake trout. This rod of course competes with the Redington Dually, and despite how tried and true the Dually is, I will say this rod is a step above. They not only delivered a good casting switch rod, but it actually looks nice. The reel seat is quality and appears to be shared by St. Croix, the grip is excellent in shape, feel, and looks. The rod guides are Fiji and of good quality with alignment dots on each section of rod. Overall, despite the first rod breaking, I will give this rod a 4 out of 5 due to the excellent price point and good performance and looks. If you are considering a switch rod and don't want to spend an arm and a leg don't hesitate to get this rod. If Bass Pro used a higher quality blank (keeping all other things the same) and priced this at 200 to 220 it would still be a value, but as it sits...great rod. Pair with the Rio Switch Chucker line for a versatile setup capable of swinging flies for steelies, dead drifting for kings, or shooting big streamers out in a lake for spring lakers.
