Rated 5 out of 5Â by mholton Great beginner rod
Just bought this rod and as a beginner find it a great rod for a beginner as well as an experienced fisherman. Rod/reel seems of pretty decent quality. It also comes with a no questions asked LIFETIME WARRANTY which is what really sold me. I would definitely recommend this combo.

I received this outfit as a Christmas gift last year and I have to say, with no instruction, no classes, the rod helped make it a successful first year fly fishing. A friend bought a lesser combo from a competitor at the same time and wasn't able to get the hang of casting all year. The rod communicated great when the line would load up, and it would unload smooth and accurate. I can't say how many casts I was able to put right where I wanted it to be. I like it so much, I'm thinking about getting another one of these rods in a 3wt to take backpacking for brook trout.
As for the reel, the very first time it got wet, the retrieve became a bit gritty and hasn't improved since. I haven't actually had to fight a fish with it, since I didn't hook into a fish larger than about 17" rainbow trout, but I think that would be a downfall.
Overall, if I actually had to use the reel as a reel and rely on the drag, I might have rated it differently, but since it pretty much is just a line holder, I rated it purely on the line/leader/rod, hence why I gave it 5 stars.

bought combo oct 2011 for salmon/steelhead on the salmon river in NY. rod faught countless fish well. the reel on the other hand didn't fair so well. couldn't get the drag set right from the start, so set loose and palmed nearly every fish i faught.fished 36 hrs and faught over 30 fish and the drag is already shot. will return reel to have checked out but buy the rod on its own and match it up to a better reel.
