Here's the deal: Windproof – Yes Waterproof – Yes Warm – When layered Spent the afternoon scouting in moderate to heavy rain, 38 degrees and windy. These pants did exactly what I needed them to, kept me warm and dry. After 3+ hours of trekking through the woods and HEAVY NC briars I was completely dry and the pants did not snag at all. I had initial concerns about the material holding up to this natural barbed-wire but not even a pick. The pants fit well and easily cover my tall Irish Setter boots, the side zips are just right. The belt loops and pockets are great, making these a true pair of pants, not just pull-overs like my venerable NF gear. The slash pockets are easy to access even with light gloves on and the cargo pocket (with storm flap closed and snapped) kept my rangefinder completely dry. The rubberized “shirt grippers” are a thoughtful touch that do just what they're supposed to. The downside to these pants? They're not silent if you brush your legs together when you walk, but even in a light rain the background noise covers it up. As to warmth, I swear by layering having grown up in WI. Just wear your favorite base layer depending on temp/activity and you can't go wrong. Paired with the Jacket (see review), you can't beat this combo for the price, or even a good bit more. Why 4 stars and not 5? I swear by North Face outerwear because when you're hiking in the middle of nowhere that even god has forgotten about, you simply can't compromise on your gear. That being said, I would recommend these pants and jacket for anyplace else. Besides, they come in Realtree AP and don't break the bank. December 1, 2008
