After reading some good reviews in various fishing magazines, I decided to give it a try. Fished the Devil Horse and it out caught just about every other top water lure I own. Great product.

Just picked up another one of these because it was so special last year. Threw a devils horse to 2 feet of water, half way back I saw a big bass following it. I stopped it and the props stopped. Paused and popped it one more time. She attacked it. 8.6# personal best. Figured I better get a backup.....

Right out of the box the finish was cracking and missing screws in the hook holders. Still can't get the blades to spin right and the hooks tangle easily. It's not the same quality lure I remember from years ago but still a good topwater for the price.

When I've tried braid, it gets caught in the props. I need to find the balance between castability and strenght. What line type and pound test has worked best for you?Answers
A:
I use 20# braid and have never had repeted problems.I started out using 10# Trilene 40 years ago,but in florida you run across bigger fish,so I moved up to the 20# PowerPro braid.Images for this Answer

30lb braid with 3' fluorA:
Same problem with braid but I live with it, flouro sinks which is bad. You can use mono but have to size up so much it outweighs benefit. Or tie on a flouro leader to your braid.A:
triline 8 pound monofiloment works perficty especaly since it floatsA:
I use 12pound Berkely Trilene XL smooth casting and it works fine.Answers
A:
Almost flat across, but bent back just a little.Sometimes you have to twist the props slightly.Action is important. After your cast wait 10 seconds then gently jerk the bait moving about 6" or so.Keep repeating this, you will catch fish.Top 1000 Contributor
A:
you do not really need to bend the propsTop 1000 Contributor
A:
Props on baits are rotated for speed which increases water movement and thereforenoise. Continue the pitch or twist (L or R)
to increase speed. Flattening blades will
also slow prop rotation and reduce noise.
This will also increase speed of bait travel
which moves the bait out of the strike zone
sooner.

You can buy new for $6.00 or less.A:
Well, they are usually $4.99 brand new. You could probably get $2 or $3 for it depending on the shape it's in.Top 250 Contributor
A:
the devils horse lure's are still in production so their value is probably the same as the existing price. smithwick also made other surface lure's like the KING SNIPE and BUCK N BAWL. if you have any of these tucked away especially the king snipe, their worth $$$ to any collector.Answers

White is the best.A:
I have found that darker colors work better, but I usually only fish in dark/murky water. I get a alot of hits within 2 seconds of the lure falling on the water, so I don't think they even care about color.A:
I fish a private lake and the white with Zebra stripes/ orange nose work best for me.A:
I've had the best luck with Color 90, Tennesse Shad. Just fish it slowly and patiently over shallow weed beds or twitch it past a submerged tree and hold on.Top 250 Contributor
A:
your talking about one of the BEST surface lure's ever made. i have fished them for 40 year's. color is simply a matter of choice for top water bait's. however, i like frog --- black/yellow and silver/black or blue---A:
I have used every devil horse I can find, and the one I have the most luck on is the Green with Orange bottom.Details:
Does this lure roll or spin when it is retrieved (causing line twist)? If it does how can I fix it?Answers
A:
No, the only thing that rolls or spins is the propellers (one on each end). They just move on their own and do not effect the line.A:
I always use a a clip swivel when using any lure..A:
No, it does not roll in the water. The hooks on it.s belly keep it up right. just use short jerks and pause on retreve. keep the line slack reeled in, and be ready.A:
No it doesn't!A:
this lure is best left setting and twitched. when you are out of the "fish zone"you can reel it rapidly with no twist.Top 25 Contributor
A:
No. The lure doesn't roll or spin during your retrieve. The only way to get line twist is if the line gets tangled around the propellers on the cast.A:
Sometimes it does when the line crosses the front blade. The way I fixed it was to use a small snap swivel. It keeps the line from getting around it.Answers

I've never fished for Peacock bass, but if they hit spinnerbaits and are reaction bite fish, then I would say yes.Top 250 Contributor
A:
are you talking about the peacock bass in florida or in so. america? if florida --yes, if so. america, the lure's and hook's are too small for the big boy's. the 'amazon ripper' is what you want for so. america----any lure with a hook on it can catch a fish. you improve your odd's of landing the big one's with the larger lure's that tear-up the surface. i've caught and landed 20# plus steelhead on # 8 fly's so go figure---A:
i would say yes if they have something that would look like a frog use ing the frog colored bait have not used any other color YETQ:

I'm looking for the 3" or 3.5" Devil's Horse without the spinners on them. Do they still make them?
Answers
A:
The spinners make the lure.I've never seen one without spinners.A:
I use only the Devil's Horse with the Propeller.. I am very aggressive with the lure and make noise as I reel it in.A:
I haven't seen any :(. But you might try the zara spook/super spook jr. as it's very similar (I think because I don't own the devil yet) and the spook is very good.Top 25 Contributor
A:
I don't recall seeing a Devil's Horse without the spinners. This is a question that might be best answered in a call to the maker.Details:
I always see the Yellow and Black version of this lure but I'm not sure if that's because it is the best to use or not.Answers

The white with black stripes mimic a shiner.I've tried other colors with no or little sucess.A:
I have had some luck with yellow and black but I tend to be more lucky with darker colors (like the frog colored one)Top 25 Contributor

The yellow and black version is a good choice. It works very well in the morning and evening and is also good during midday.A:
Anything with alittle yellow fished at first light. You cant go wrong with that.Top 500 Contributor

AS AN AVID BASS FISHERMAN I RECENTLY DISCOVERED THE FEILD OF CREATING MY OWN LURE COLORS. JUST BUY YOUR FAVORITE LURES IN WHITE OR THE MOST NUETRAL COLOR THEY OFFER AND PAINT IT WHATEVER COLOR YOU WANT. YOU CAN USE A PIECE OF SCREEN FROM A WINDOW TO ADD DIFFERENT LOOKS AND DEPTH BUT THE SENSE OF PRIDE YOU GET FROM CATCHING A FISH ON A LURE COLOR THAT YOU CREATED IS JUST AWESOME. YOU CAN ALSO BUY DIFFERENT COLOR EYES. HOP E THIS BUT USHOULD GIVE IT A TRY ANYWAY. GOOD LUCK1 of 1
