Stones are reversed
Thanks BigMule. Your heads up about the medium and fine stones being reversed was right on. I just bought the Tri Hone and found the same thing. The sharpener works good but if someone doesn't know which stone to use it might not be so good.

Smith's Tri Hone Shaprener
Catalog description states: "...includes three 6-inch Arkansas stones." I was apprehensive about this description because I only knew of two grades of Arkansas stones: soft and hard and neither of these have properties that will restore the edge on a dull knife. A coarse stone is needed. Sure enough, when the product arrived the stone labeled COARSE is made of aluminum oxide - a synthetic material. In addition, the two Arkansas stones are mislabeled; the softer stone is labeled FINE and the harder stone is labeled MEDIUM. But, ain't no thang because I have enough sense to choose the correct stone for what I need. Over all, it's a good product.

Arkansas stone is a naturally occuring rock that is found only near Hot Springs, Arkansas and is used for honing (polishing) sharp edges made of steel. The grit varies but, basically, hones made of Arkansas stone is/are classified as HARD and SOFT. The coarse stone on the Smith Tri Stone Sharpener is a synthetic substance made of aluminum oxide. Don't know the grit classification of the stone provided but it works well to restore the edge on a dull knife and prepare it for honing.
