First time at the range I was shooting 1" and 2" groups from 21 feet, 4" groups at 25 yards which is better than any of my other 5 handguns .
This gun is very comfortable and recoil is well controlled. I have put several different brands of ammo through it and had not problems.
I would definitely recommend this gun!

Wonderful gun. well balanced, solid and shoots great. the full length grip improved my shooting immensely over the compact Taurus i had been using. I would suggest forking out a little more for the M&P Pro series ($569 at gun show for the PRO .40 S&W). It has better trigger and i believe upgraded barrel. It is definitely my favorite handgun now.

Great punch and very easy to shoot and light trigger. Great hand gun for home defence. Easy mag loading. Wait for offers that give you a 2 mag re-bait or a 30 dollar mail in. Must love to shoot this gun have been tru 450+ round in one session and not one jam, will get a little warm but loves to put out lead and will keep it going as fast as you can re-load the mags. Safety is not a option? Keep your finger off the trigger.

I purchased this Smith and Wesson M&P40 a couple weeks ago. It is my first semi-automatic. I read a lot of reviews and spent time in the store checking out different models. The Smith felt the best in my hand. It also looks great. The weight is perfect - substantial enough to steady your grip but not too heavy. It has three different size handle pieces - I left the medium in place as it felt the best. The magazine holds 15 rounds of .40 caliber ammo and it comes with two mags. I mounted a laser on the accessory rail on the front of the gun as well.
How does it shoot? I came back from spending some time at the range today and I shoots excellent! I was a little worried about recoil on this vs a 9mm, but recoil was barely noticeable for me (I used a two-handed grip). The trigger feels pretty light - use the pad of your finger and it gives you good control. This gun is extremely comfortable - it just fits your hand well.
Other operation: ejecting magazines is quick and easy. The slide is a little tough to rack - takes a little getting used to, but it feels good. I honestly wouldn't want it lighter. Field stripping the gun for oiling and cleaning was relatively painless and only took me a few minutes my first time - I'm sure it will be quicker over time.
For the price, this is an excellent choice. Good on the range, and with the .40 caliber hollow point, it is a great defensive weapon as well - it has punch, and with a 15 round magazine will just keep on punching long after just about any realistic threat is taken care of. Highly recommended!
