Simms® Solar Sombrero Hat
A better fishing hat
Although this hat isn't the most GQ look for middle-age fishermen, I still purcahsed this hat this summer of 2010 for the sole purpose of using it to shade my head and face on a fishing trip to Boca Paila Mexico.
I was very pleased with this hat because the slide band easily adjusted to make the hat fit comfortably on my head. The chin strap was comfortable enough and when adjusted properly the hat stayed on my head even at higher boat speeds. The hat was mostly comfotable and did it's job. I think the black coloring of the underside of the hat brim must of helped with both overhead sun glare and also with the intense sun glare from water reflection. The hat was truely the only shade aboard our boat.
If I had any critisisms about the hat it would be that the hat is not vented and I'd surely suggest that the manufacture consider doing so and maybe that they make the hat a bit more stylish.
Nevertheless the hat shaded my head, face, and eye's; it was more often comfortable, and very durable within the saltwater environment and tropic conditions in Boca Paila. I think this hat is a great value for the buck. Overall I am well pleased with the hat.

Simms Solar Sombrero
A great hat to keep the sun off of your face, and the back of your neck. It's a blessing to stop the sun from punishing you and turning your ears stop sign red! It works perfectly, and really is a joy to have on your head all day in the sun and heat. It's VERY light weight, and you can snug it down so you don't donate it to the fish in high winds. The only downside, (for me that is) is that I look horrible in it!

A must for intense sun fishing...
This year I was disgnosed with a basal cell carcinoma. Being a Texas angler and hunter for most of my 44 years certainly caused this condition. Unfortunately I wasn't good about wearing sun screen or protective clothing until this eye opening experience.
This year I began wearing the sombrero, a long sleeved fishing shirt (white) and plenty of sunscreen. In addition to avoiding the risk of sun exposure, I really feel better at the end of the day. Even when you don't burn, the exposure to UVA/UVB rays all day really zaps your energy.
The sombrero offers excellent protection, IN ADDITION TO SUN SCREEN. It is cool, comfortable and breathes well. When you couple the sombrero with a long-sleeved fishing shirt (World Wide Sportsman item #38-702-939-05), you are well protected even in high full sun.
The extra dollars spent on this hat are worth it - it is cooler and has much better construction compared to its cheaper counterparts!
Don't forget the high SPF sun screen and lip balm with SPF!
