Great Trolling Rod This is an excellent rod for trolling for striped bass in east Tennessee rivers and reservoirs. I prefer the medium action. The only negative issue is the foam handle which can have chunks torn away by the rod holder if you get into a lot big fish - 20+ pounds and you have the drag set tight. I tape the foam handle with duct tape which solves this problem. You can spruce up your rod by using duct tape which has your favorite school's logo on it. You can pay a lot more for a rod but you won't find a better trolling rod - at least for trolling for large stripers. If you troll for smaller fish, say 10 pounds maximum, I would use a medium-light rod and the foam handle will not be an issue. May 7, 2013
Great trolling rod I have been using these for at least ten years, replacing pairs every couple years. Trolling with downriggers for striped bass, 3-10 lbs, avg. size. Almost indestructible, never broken one. July 19, 2012
durable beyond belief I inherited this rod from my father who has had it for several years, and liked it alot. I have used it only sparingly, but it is the rod i lend to friends and family when they want to learn to fish. It has held up for 4 years for me already, and has been through some serious abuse. It has been slammed in the trucks tailgate, thrashed in the bushes, and pulled in some pretty impressive fish. Never heard a crack or a squeak, it has quite a few scratches, and wear, but the performance has been unaffected. It gest stored outdoors yearround, unless it is sitting in the back of the car, and stays straight and true, with out even showing fade from the sun. August 25, 2009
What a tool What value for money these rods are, you would never believe what these rods have caught and the jobs they do well. I have the 9 foot medium to heavy and i use it for deep wreck fishing, salmon fishing as a trolling rod and for the tuna, striped marlin and sailfish. So tough, all my mates have them now, combined with a decent reel and some braid there ain't much these rods can't handle. Had a 300lb black marlin subdued in no time. The rod was seriously under tension but never a groan was heard, amazing bit of kit. Mine now is 12 years old and still in use, i also have 3 others just in case they stop making them. A:
Yes, my buddies use bait casters but I like open face reels. Nevertheless it will work with a bait caster.

A:
Yes. I have done this a couple of times, and things worked well. The one thought is that a pistol grip actually makes casting multiple times easier.

A:
I haven't used a low profile bait caster on this rod, but I feel it would be okay to use, I don't see why not. The eyes are really low and close to the rod so it wouldn't interfere. I think it would just look a little funny.
