Shimano’s Sustain FG Spinning Reel boasts the company’s X-Ship design, which is said to provide rigidity plus a tremendous amount of cranking power. A Magnumlite CI4 rotor reduces resistance on rotation, resulting in a tremendously smooth action. A Rapid Fire Drag allows anglers to quickly adjust drag to an ideal setting while fighting fish. Other features include shielded A-RB ball bearings; an S® rotor, guard and arm cam; plus an SR® 3D gear and 1-piece bail wire. The reels also sport a repairable clicker and are approved for use in saltwater. An innovative removable “kickstand” keeps the reel propped up, when you lay it down, so that the bail wire won’t get bent, and also protects the reel from scratches. Rated for use with mono, fluorocarbon and PowerPro® lines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth as Silk I was on the lake today with a Shimano Sustain 4000FG and my first impression is the smooth action the reel has.I've fished with every type reel that is out there(baitcaster, spinning ..etc) and like this reel.I'm taking it to my favorite creek next weekend where it will get a real workout. Rated 4 out of 5 by Good but not excellent Over the years, I have owned Shimano Saros, Stradic CI4, Sustain FE, and a Curado baitcaster. I still have a Stradic CI4 and a Curado. I used to have a Sustain 2500FE. It was very smooth when idle. But when a fish, even a small one, is on the line, it would make grinding noise. The reel was heavy at 9.4 oz which made my elbow pain when I fished on a canoe. So I sold it. Couple weeks ago, I got a chance to play with my friend new Sustain 2500FG. I think Shimano made some improvements. It is lighter now but still heavy at 8.3 oz for a reel at this price range. It is about the same smoothness although the bearing count is increased by one. It is unfortunately not silent but still considered to be quiet. Yes with the huge price increase, you still lose the extra spool and the titanium coated spool lip. Shimano drag system is smooth, reliable but is made of oil felt washers so it can be cooked if you fight a big one for a long time. I think a reel this expensive should at least have a carbon fiber drag system. Overall I give it a 4 star for its excellent line management, smoothness and product service. December 29, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best spinning reel I've ever purchased The sustain reel is definelty worth every penny I paid. I have owned stradics, quantums, Abus and this has become my new favourite spinning reel. So much power and finesse at the same time. Drag is incredible. September 10, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Buttery Smooth What do I say, was looking for a trout size reel that can handle target species but also can handle unintended monster fish in the event they should bite the line, you never know fishing saltwater. Anyway this reel was the ticket, didn’t want to spend Stella money but I wanted a smooth quality reel and sustain fit the bill. Did I say butter smooth and light weight, holy cow this reel is so light weight it feels cheap (a good thing) I have the 5000FG and was shocked at how small it was for a 5000 class spinner. This thing cast a mile and guess what while throwing a yozuri lure hooked up with a 41 inch red fish, this reel put the breaks on this guy. Buttery smooth drag and light weight perfect combo. There is a video on youtube, a guy caught a 50ln ling with the sustain… the reel are super powerful don’t let the weight of the reel fool you. July 11, 2012

Is it much of a disadvantage to have 15lbs drag instead of 20lbs like most comparable reels?

A:
The problem is not the drag force. 15 is more than enough for the freshwater fishing I do. The problem is the drag is oil felt which can be smoked if you fight a salmon for a hour. I would prefer drags made of carbon fiber or ceramics.
