Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Reel I had recently written off Shimano after a lesser model had failed me after less then a year. Also, one of my rod tips snapped off on a snag with less then a year of use. This reel however has been flawless so far. I have already caught well over 100 bass with this reel. Quite a few have been over 5 pounds with no issues with the drag. I have been using it with 50 pound PowerPro Super Slick 8, and I can throw a 1/4 ounce red eye shad lipless crankbait extremely far. I have to use heavy braid because of the amount of cover I fish. I was worried that I would lose casting distance. It was never an issue. April 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by best reel for big bass So lightweight and smooth I couldnt ask for a better reel for largemouth bass fishing I have the 2500 model and it works a 7.5 bass in easy. March 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worth every penny Yesterday I bought the CI4+ 2500 and had it spooled with 150 yards of 10 lb. Power Pro. I've paired it with a St Croix Premier ML rod specifically for fishing for trout on the flats in Sarasota Bay. Today I landed a 24" Speckled Trout (a new personal best). The reel performed flawlessly; great distance on my casts, smooth quiet drag, reels like butter, and balances with the St Croix perfectly. Buy a better reel, catch a bigger fish....EZPZ. Rated 5 out of 5 by another winner this thing is sweet !! smooth as butter and strong as an ox ,I recently bought the new shimano stradic 4000 ci4+ and matched it with a shimano crucial 7' mh jig and worm rod for fishing the Chesapeake bay for rockfish#stripers# I did some river fishing last weekend and found a nice channel catfish on my line this reel handled it like it was a minnow plenty of power and more than enough drag to tame just about any fish you want cant wait to toss it into a feeding school of rockfish February 25, 2014

I have mine on a G Loomis Gl3 medium light 7ft fast action. For fishing bass in slop I'd step up to Medium/Medium heavy. If you're not looking to spend the 240-some odd dollars on a rod, the Johnny Morris CarbonLite spinning rod is a fantastic alternative. Again, medium light-medium heavy depending on structure. The longer the rod, the longer the cast. I prefer a fast action rod because it ensures a stiffer tip with more backbone, whereas medium action will have a softer tip. Hope this helps!

It does not come with an extra spool. However, an extra spool can be ordered. The phone number to the service department is 877-577-0600. You can always visit the Shimano website too at fish.shimano.com
