Rated 5 out of 5 by A piece of fishing art It's just plain beautiful. Smooth as silk, Zero backlash. Never seen anything like it. It's a lot of money for an ultralight reel and that first scratch is gonna hurt, but OMG, it's amazing. I have a couple of the stratic CI4's which are nice , but this reel just blows everything away. Rated 5 out of 5 by smooth and strong Purchased A Stella 3000FE for walleye casting and flatline trolling. Great reel, smooth, strong and casts a mile. Paired up with a LOOMIS NRX 6'10" Med rod NRX822SDSRG and this is favorite walleye outfit for casting and flatline trolling. Takes braid line without problems. 5 Stars Keep lubricated and this reel should last a lifetime. April 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best reel around I bought my first Stella 11 years ago and recently sold it for more that I paid for it. I used that money to get a new 5000 SW Stella and can't believe how much better it actually is. They are getting too pricey now so this will most likely be the last one. March 22, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by bad one? i have all the shimano reels down to sahara.Maybe i just got a bad stella. But its no smoother then my stradic. In fact i think it has a bad bearing. January 28, 2013

I have the 1000 FE and I'm going to put mono on it for lake trout. I'm just not a big fan of Braid although I am going to try Powerpro Microline on my Stratic Ci4 FML. I've caught a lot of trout on mono so I'm going to start with that on the Stella.

A:
all depends on what your fishing for, water conditions,If in mainly clear water away from structure use flurocarbon,if around trees etc use braid .Braid can be hard on a reel due to no stretch.

Although it's designed to handle braid well, that doesn't mean it can only handle braid. I'd suggest you spool it with whatever you expect to use most frequently for the type of fishing you do. Unfortunately spare spools for Stellas cost more than most reels so unless you have even more $$ to burn, you'll probably be stuck with whatever you put on it until you decide to respool.

Since this is a freshwater reel I would recommend mono. Flouro isn't bad but it is expensive and there really aren't any benefits to it for the average angler. On my light weight reels I use Trilene XL and for my medium reels I use Suffix Elite.
