I bought mine 4 years ago when i was stationed in Panama city fishing for reds, trout and anything near shore , but now I am stationed in kodiak, Ak and have the 4000 and the 5000 alaska catching Big Silvers and the reel is still holding up. Great product expect nothing less from shimano, and good price.

Always fished stradics before this. Very solid simple design- designed for saltwater by shimano. Love the water proof drag. Caught several 40+ inch snook on 5000 series and has held up like a tank. Smooth drag and very sturdy feeling reel. Shimano just makes great stuff.

ive caught everything from inshore reds to big ol grouper in this reel it is by far the best reel ive ever owned. the drag is nice and smooth and line just floats off of it

It seems every time I intend to purchase a Penn reel, I leave with a Shimano. After comparing several popular reels, I bought the Spheros 4000FB and loaded it with 20lb braid and there isn't much it won't reel in. From inshore snappers to tarpon, this reel is ready. Fit and finish is great and the build quality is superior.
This is a great reel to complement my Shimano 6500 Baitrunner for larger fish. But, the 6500 has gotten signicantly less use since I purchased the Spheros.

I personally would pick at least a 7ft rod with some decent backbone to complement the beefy drag of this reel. I have on Spheros on a discontinued All Star Inshore. Another good option would be the Medium-Heavy 7ft. 2inch Shimano Terez or the 7ft. Teramar in either MH or Medium.It really depends on what you are fishing for.

The reel will mostly be used in freshwater for cats, but sometimes in the ocean for bluefish and shark. Which do you think I should get; Shimano Spheros or Fin-Nor Sportfisher? Judging from the reviews, both seem to be a decent reel. Thanks!Answers

I cannot speak of the endurance of the Fin-Nor but the Spheros is an absolute tank. I have dunked both of my reels and had not ill effects.The drag is water-proof and the gears are extremely tough. I am currently trying out the Penn Battle and Conquer but I will not know their endurance ratings for at least a year.
I would go with the Spheros, there are a ton of fisherman on the East coast who swear by it. I don't know anyone who owns the Sportfisher.

i'm fishing for tarpon in fl. i need to know what kind of drag power these spheros have?

i use it for shark with the 18000 but a model thats a bit lighter would be great for tarpon

If you are going after tarpon near the beach you can get away with a lower pound test braid and high capacity.If you are planning on fishing near bridges, pilings, structure, etc then you need some extra strength.
The 8000 series has 27lbs of drag, meaning you can load on 30lb to 40lb braid and handle most tarpon situations.
If you are going to be near some heavy cover and structure you may need the 14000 with its 44lbs of maximum drag. This size would also handle a lot of 50 to 60lb braid.
At this time these are the only sizes that I am seeing on the BPS website that would work for you. It is a big jump from the 8000 to the 14000 in size and weight. I personally would go with the 8000.

i use the 18000 with braid for shark, from that experience, i know that it handels braid great, with a lighter reeel, i can only imagine the results would be just as good.

I personally would go with a Shimano Stradic or maybe a Penn Battle or Conquer if you are after bonefish. If you are using a leader of only 10 or 15 pounds then chances are your braid will be in that range. Therefore a 3000 size for either Shimano or Penn products would be fine.I do like the spheros but it lack the smoothness I find in my previous suggestions. It is an absolute workhorse but not lacks in the refinement of the other aforementioned reels.
By the way, I would strongly suggest fluoro leaders as opposed to mono. Fluorocarbon has a lower density making it more clear and more sensitive due to lack of stretch. If you aren't sure what size braid to use I would go with 15lb power pro slick. You may find yourself trying to cast an unweighted shrimp on the flats and find that 20lb braid is not getting you the distance you need.

It's a good reel to use for bonefishing. I've used it numerous times for bonefishing in Grand Cayman and it performed well. I use Spiderwire 20# test which has the 6# diameter and a flourocarbon leader.

No better choice at this price. Works great with braid. 400 size should be just right. Suffix is hard to beat in 10 lb.Q:Â
