Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 17 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by best reel ever best purchase ever line comes off reel soo smooth and it is just an over great reel . i have the 4000 it can handle anything from cuda to snook to huge runners great reel August 14, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by 4.5 rating I owned Shimano Symetre 2500 for a few years and liked the performance, but wanted a reel that would hold up cosmetically to the saltwater. A salesman at Bass Pro reccomended the Shperos 3000FB. I fish saltwater at least 50-60 times a year. I have caught 15-20 lb. Kingfish, 20 lb. Cobia, and have fought 100 lb. Tarpon with this reel. The drag is very smooth. It has held up very nicely in Saltwater. My only complaint is the design of the bail. I have to make sure the line is on the roller on every cast. For me, it has become a habit to properly seat the line on every cast, but when others use the reel, it came become a problem. June 19, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Purchase Having owned the Shimano Spheros 4000FA for a number of years, I bought the latest version 4000FB. The reel looks and operates really good as I expected. It's a tough reel that can take alot of abuse from saltwater fishing and never lets me down! February 13, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Typical Shimano! I expect nothing but the best reels in whatever price range from Shimano and have yet to be disappointed. I've used this reel for over 4 years fishing for largemouth and spotted bass, reds, snook, jacks, and blues...no problems and don't expect any. November 20, 2010

I personally would pick at least a 7ft rod with some decent backbone to complement the beefy drag of this reel. I have on Spheros on a discontinued All Star Inshore. Another good option would be the Medium-Heavy 7ft. 2inch Shimano Terez or the 7ft. Teramar in either MH or Medium.

It really depends on what you are fishing for.

I hope this helps.

The reel will mostly be used in freshwater for cats, but sometimes in the ocean for bluefish and shark. Which do you think I should get; Shimano Spheros or Fin-Nor Sportfisher? Judging from the reviews, both seem to be a decent reel. Thanks!

I cannot speak of the endurance of the Fin-Nor but the Spheros is an absolute tank. I have dunked both of my reels and had not ill effects.

The drag is water-proof and the gears are extremely tough. I am currently trying out the Penn Battle and Conquer but I will not know their endurance ratings for at least a year.

I would go with the Spheros, there are a ton of fisherman on the East coast who swear by it. I don't know anyone who owns the Sportfisher.

I hope this helps.

If you are going after tarpon near the beach you can get away with a lower pound test braid and high capacity.

If you are planning on fishing near bridges, pilings, structure, etc then you need some extra strength.

The 8000 series has 27lbs of drag, meaning you can load on 30lb to 40lb braid and handle most tarpon situations.

If you are going to be near some heavy cover and structure you may need the 14000 with its 44lbs of maximum drag. This size would also handle a lot of 50 to 60lb braid.

At this time these are the only sizes that I am seeing on the BPS website that would work for you. It is a big jump from the 8000 to the 14000 in size and weight. I personally would go with the 8000.

I hope this helps

FOR TARPON 100+ LBS A SPHEROS 8000 WOULD DO, A PENN SLAMMER LIVELINER 560 BETTER, AND A SARAGOSA 8000 WOULD BE GREAT

How will this reel work with braid?

Is there a better choice?

I will use this reel for bonefish and other small-to-medium sized saltwater species with mono leaders of 10-15 lb. test.

Which model should I buy?

What weight braid should I use?

I personally would go with a Shimano Stradic or maybe a Penn Battle or Conquer if you are after bonefish. If you are using a leader of only 10 or 15 pounds then chances are your braid will be in that range. Therefore a 3000 size for either Shimano or Penn products would be fine.

I do like the spheros but it lack the smoothness I find in my previous suggestions. It is an absolute workhorse but not lacks in the refinement of the other aforementioned reels.

By the way, I would strongly suggest fluoro leaders as opposed to mono. Fluorocarbon has a lower density making it more clear and more sensitive due to lack of stretch. If you aren't sure what size braid to use I would go with 15lb power pro slick. You may find yourself trying to cast an unweighted shrimp on the flats and find that 20lb braid is not getting you the distance you need.

I hope this helps

It's a good reel to use for bonefishing. I've used it numerous times for bonefishing in Grand Cayman and it performed well. I use Spiderwire 20# test which has the 6# diameter and a flourocarbon leader.

No better choice at this price. Works great with braid. 400 size should be just right. Suffix is hard to beat in 10 lb.
