I have a couple of these reels from when they first came out....about 25 years ago....and they still haul in fish... I love these reels and have recently purchased 2 in each size as other reels we have used just don't stand up to the abuse we put them through....excellent reel for the money.

I bought the 4000 for a catfish rig and strung it with Stren 20 pound test. This is a basic bare bones but highly effective reel. For the cost you can't beat it. These are great for beginners or for someone who wants to setup a multiple rig outfit and not spend a ton of cash. Shimano makes a great product and even this bottom of the line reel is high quality.

I own 3 so far but will buy them when ever I get a chance. Ive had a 2000 for about 20+ years and only now I feel like it needs a lube. Ive had a 1000 for about 10+ years and still flawless. Just got another 1000 just for trout. I wish they made 1 small enuf for ice fishing! Taken everything from bluegills to musky and some salt water! Tons of trout and bass! A great buy!!!

The good is that this is a VERY smooth and solid reel. I would have no problems using it to reel in anything in my local pond creek.
The bad, and I partially blame myself for not reading reviews closely, but if you buy this, know that the anti-reverse is REALLY FUNKY. Basically the antireverse kicks in in ONE SPOT only, which is basically the point where you pickup the line and flip the bail open. Once you start retrieving, if you hook a fish, and your hand is not solid on the handle, the reel will reel backwards until it hits that ONE POINT. The anti-reverse doesn't kick in until you hit that one point, which in simple terms is roughly 359 degrees out of 360.
That being said, you're not paying much money for the reel, and if you were stranded on an island, and needed to fish to save your life, this reel would work great.
