Rated 5 out of 5 by Core50mg7 Great reel.. Throws light baits very well. Would also consider buying 100 size. December 30, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Quality Reel The Core 50MG7 is my fourth baitcasting reel, and by far my favorite. It is wonderfully smooth, light and well made. I am glad I spent more and got a lot more. I am extremely pleased with this reel. November 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by very happy All i can say i have been fishing for a while and used bait casters for some number of years.. I was looking for a reel to replace my diawa HVA103 that is about 15 years old ( nothing worng with it just wanted something newer and lighter) so i was told that the quantum smoke and the EXO where really good so i got the smoke and then another and then another.....finally i gave up........did more research and decided between the diawa steez and the MG core 50.......both really nice but i have to say after looking at the price it was a no brainer.... i got the MG50 this morning and spooled it up with suffix 832 30LBS braid and i was amazed!!!!! casted father then ANY bait caster i have ever had NOT 1 NEST!!!!! A++++ ok now the size...small yes very, it fit perfect in my hand ( my hands are medium size) weight feels like nothing.... pros: weight, balanced, size, fit and finish, PRICE.. Cons: None August 20, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice, but I'm new to bait-casting reels, so take the pros with a grain of salt. Pros: *Casts 1/4oz lures much better than my CT201B *Smoother than my CT201B *Light Cons: *All three screws holding the left side plate on were loose. Would have ruined my first outing with the reel had I not happened to have a multi-tool on hand at the time. *The main gear, in spite of being brand-new, had spots of discoloration. The reel has been used one time, and wasn't dunked. *The reel came out of the box missing the "Handle Retainer" and screw (prevents the handle nut from loosening) *No backup anti-reverse mechanism, unlike the CT201B. *This reel has 9 ball bearings (8 + IAR). I initially counted only 5, and wondered where the other four were. Then I found them, in knobs on the handle. I really don't need bearings in the knobs of my reels, and consider them wasteful in that role. I notice no difference between the CT201B and 51MG7 knobs, even though the CT201B has no bearings in its knobs. Why are there four bearings in the knobs, but none on the level-wind worm? I don't mind not having bearings on the worm, but, if you're going to use 9 bearings, it seems to me the worm would be a better location for a couple of those. *Not the easiest reel to service. -Dealing with the clutch pawl during assembly is frustrating. -Dealing with the drag star and spring during assembly is frustrating. The implementation of the drag adjustment click feature is the cause of this. The feature really doesn't justify the extra effort required on assembly. August 12, 2012

I certainly wouldn't use the Core in Salt Water... it's a brilliant reel for fresh water and I wouldn't take it near salt water.

You dont pick the action of your rod by what reel you have. It totally depends on what you intend on doing with the rod. Jigging, moving baits, sizes and weights. There is a ton of variables that come into play when your trying to pick the perfect action rod. What do you intend you using the rig for?

I ask this because every other Shimano reel I have ever bought had an insert in the box that the reel sat securely in. Mine was just loose in the Shimano box in the small bubble wrap bag. Input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There isn't a knob that clicks. The Core has a Variable Brake System that uses centrifugal force. You adjust the brake by turning on or off six internal brake weights (click out for on and in for off). The system works well and is very intuitive.
