The Shimano Calcutta D Series Baitcast Reels combine advantages of both low-profile and round reels. The Calcutta D Series Baitcasters have a much smaller profile than Calcutta B models. They're 15% smaller in height, 11% narrower, and 11% lighter. The reels feature a one-piece aluminum frame, an aluminum sideplate, and Shimano's smooth X-Drag. A lightweight machined aluminum body and Variable Braking System make these reels easy to like. Other features include a five-bearing system and HEG gearing. The 200 size reel has a double-paddle freshwater handle. The 300/400 size has a double-paddle saltwater handle.

So what it doesnt have quick access to the vbs but what it does have over the calcutta te is the compact s body!! trust me this reel was destined to have bad reviews because there are simply to many die hard calcutta te fans out there that want a musky reel that looks like it can bring in free willy on his best day..to be honest I like the new calcutta D's. the transformation is a huge improvement over the TE its smoother, light weight, quitter, cast further, and best of all it palms like a bass reel with the power to match a calcutta TE. Its simply awesome buy one unscrew three screws pop out one more brake and never open it again. this reel is simply awesome I just hope that all the TE fans ignorance doesnt throw shimano off of the right direction with the calcutta line of reels. jim saric well show you on you tube that you don't even need to thumb the reel while casting its that nice. I can switch from a 2 oz lure to a 4 oz lure without any adjustments and I still dont need to thumb the spool during a cast!

I absolutely love this reel. Best reel I have owned yet. I have the 400 and use in the saltwater. The drag system on these things are killer. I like the smaller drag star, stays out of the way when fighting big fish. This is the smoothest reel,I have ever had in my hands. Only downer is that it's a bit pricey, but well worth ever penny. I live in San Diego and have pulled in some monster fish with my 400D. There is no other bait caster in my arsenal that can do this. It's like a mini conventional reel. It's also perfect for throwing the big swim baits out here at our lakes. I am not sure what some of these other guys are talking about, but I have been buying Shimano reels since the bantams and this is hands down there best. I have a couple first gens Calcuttas as well as a couple B's and a 300TE. This reel is much smoother and stronger than all of them. Tell me who of you that own a reel that can pull in 40pound class yellow tail no problem. I can't wait to kick some muskies butts this summer in Canada.
