When I first got this rod I knew it would be good. I started out with the heavy model hooking large rays and sharks to small rockfish still having a blast because of its sensitivity. Its very strong I hooked a 120 pound big skate which was just all lifting for 15 minutes and let me tell you this rod handled it like a champ. Its been 2 years since and its still in good condition. I even bought a lighter one for lures and its a blast. They last long and there cheap. Would highly recomend this rod for your first steelhead rod.

really great rod for anything that swims. i have caught salmon, tuna, lingcod, halibut, rockcod, dorado, rooster fish, wahoo, stripers, cats, bass, marlin and carp on the heavy model. very sensitive tip and a super amount of backbone. long for good hook sets but 2 peice for portability. Simply amazing for less than 60 bucks!

If you bank for for catfish, stripers, or carp and want to increase your casting distance by 25% this is the ticket. The 8'6" heavy action model has the quality and backbone to land even the largest of these species. It is 2 piece, easy to transport has double footed eyes at the lower section with a pure metal extra thick top guide. I know it is a salmon rod and I am sure it will work well for that application but it also works excellent for other species, another excellent rod from Shakespeare.

I have the 20# medium 8'6" Lite with steel guide rings.
It felt good in the store, but in real life it's too mushy & loosely-whippy. Sensitivity is similar to a fiberglass noodle rod (which I also have)
It is now only being used off rockpiles in salt water because of the reputation for durability, but for floating or drifting for salmon or steelhead, I can't recomend.
However, if you're backtrolling or back bouncing, it's soft enough to let fish take the lure & turn before feeling the rod, and can set themselves... good for circle hooks.
It ought to be a good rod to use on downriggers, as the soft flex goes right to the butt, and seems very much like most of my downrigger rods.
You could probably bucktail silver salmon with jigs & spoons, but again, it's too soft to troll 4" flatfish in a bucktail style of prop-wash fishing.
This is as much a line-problem, but I have SW EZ mono on the reel, and the steel rings abrade to line... chatter abrasion, in salt water.
I also have Browning Six Rivers rods using the same reels, different lines and find them much more sensitive, precise in casting, and giving better distance more easily.
Except for possible greater durability, I'd pass, unless your requirement is a good downrigger rods.
