Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Shelf This is an excellent pole for trolling and expecially working the larger fis. I have learned to depend on Ugly Stik and this is another one that won't let you down. July 14, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Purchase Excellent Rod - the 8' works GREAT fishing from pier and the surf. I have teamed the rods with a Okuma SLR 20 reels. I've caught a 5' shark, couple of King Mackerels some Spanish Mackerel, Flounder and Bluefish on the coast and have used it in fresh water fishing for catfish the rod had enough backbone to muscle out a couple of 40's and 30's from under submerged brush. Over all an excellent rod and the next test will be off shore bottom fishing. July 4, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by What a hoss I was introduced to this series of rods by my cousin who is using the 6'6" heavy paired with a Ambassadeur 1000i BigGame reel spooled with 50# test for snagging spoonbill in heavy, heavy current . Needless to say I was impressed enough to buy a very similar rig myself . I bought the 8' heavy and paired it with a 9000i BigGame Ambassadeur spooled with 50# test Big Game solar mono by Berkley . Man is this the most perfect setup for boat casting for this fish that I have ever used . My cousins rig with the shorter rod is a bit to short giving you a little to much of a workout compared to the 8 footer that I bought . He used his origanally for red snapper fishing vertically with jigs and the like . But he agrees that my 8 footer is better suited to snagging form a boat but a 12 footer is better from shore or on top of a dam and I totally agree with him on this . Anyway I totally bullied a 70 # spoonbill the other day in the heaviest current I have ever fished . The current give the fish an extra advantage but even with that I still really just bulleid him to the boat and he was still green and made multiple runs that were quickly thwarted by this rig and handled it beautifully . Over all I am thourghly impressed with it . I started not to give up this rig combo so as to keep the numbers of large 50# plus fish for selfish reasons but I've always shared my success with others and can't see a reason to quit now . Good Luck and tight lines to you and yours . April 30, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by 7' MH Ugly Stik I have this rod paired with a Penn 320 GT2 and use it for fishing flatheads in heavy cover. It is a little stiff for casting and small fish feel like bluegill on this setup, but when you hook into a 40+ you'll be glad you have something this heavy. This rod will stand up to anything you can hook into. It is an excellent choice if you have big baits to cast and pull big fish from cover. The eyes are also great. Very heavy duty, will not bend. Ugly 8 ft Boat Rod

Details:
I'm going Deepsea boat fishing and I have a two part question: Will an old Shimano 4500 work okay on this rod till I can afford a new reel?

When I DO get a reel for this, what would you get?

Thanks!
