Just what I needed This rod is exactly what I needed for a certain fishing location. This river is deep and has strong current requiring heavy sinkers to hold your bait or lures on bottom. With this heavy boat rod, casting heavy sinkers and reeling them back in is a breeze. I own three of these rods now. September 16, 2012
Ugly stick and Grouper I caught a 21 inch RED-GROUPER on a light weight rod like for 8 to 12 pound line I use 20lb braided line. The rod was arched so hard I thought the reel was going to fall out and the rod was going to snap, These rods are tough. I am switching to all UGLY Stick rods. December 31, 2006
GREAT ROD I got this rod about a year ago and i love it. i have had rods brake on me before from to big of fish. But thi sone has stood up to everthing i have put in its path from tarpon and mahi to benati and jack king fish and many other fish i have the 6.6 heavy action rod and the reel is a Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 7000 Baitcaster with 50 pound braided line this combo is great highly recomend it!! March 4, 2007
ugly stick I have purchsed five different Ugly Stick rods. From the heavy to an ultra light and I ove them all. I use nothing but Abu Garcia Cardinals Reels ont hem and it is an great match. For the money they can't be beat. July 14, 2006

A:
I have not specifically used that rod for that application. However, my experience with the Ugly Sticks is favorable. They have a lot of back bone and I have not had any problems using them on big fish. They are good value for the money. However, if you are leery about losing a big fish, I would invest a little more and make sure you have something that can stand that much weight and torque.

Hi, thank you for your inquiry. No, I have not used this rod to land shark from the shore. However, for shore fishing for shark you would need to look for a rod length to match the size of shark, see examples below.

Fishing for 2 to 6 foot sharks requires a 10 to 12 foot fishing rod. A 6 to 8 foot rod will be at least 5’ 7” to 7-foot rod rated at 50 pounds and metal alloy reel seats. For 8-foot sharks, you will want to order a 5 to 7 foot rod with a metal alloy reel seat with a minimum rating of 100 pounds. Other anglers have used surf rods and/or rod with roller guides. Thanks

Ugly 8 ft Boat Rod

Details:
I'm going Deepsea boat fishing and I have a two part question: Will an old Shimano 4500 work okay on this rod till I can afford a new reel?

When I DO get a reel for this, what would you get?

Thanks!

A:
The Shimano 4500 should work on this rod.

Penn 113H or Penn 113H2 Conventional reel matches up very well with this rod.
