This river is deep and has strong current requiring heavy sinkers to hold your bait or lures on bottom. With this heavy boat rod, casting heavy sinkers and reeling them back in is a breeze. Rated 5 out of 5 by great bait stick This is the 2nd 8' Ugly Stick that I have purchased for Deep Sea Fishing. I primarily fish Hampton, N.H. and Newburyport, MA. for haddock, cod, and pollock. I also use it for jigging anything from 9 ounce to 24 ounce jigs. Works great. Haven't caught anything yet that it could not handle. Extremely satisfied with these rods. I have mine paired with a Shimano Torium 30 and 80 lb. braid. My wife's with a Daiwa Hyper-speed 35 and 80 lb. braid. July 7, 2012

I'm going Deepsea boat fishing and I have a two part question: Will an old Shimano 4500 work okay on this rod till I can afford a new reel?

When I DO get a reel for this, what would you get?
