Rated 1 out of 5 by not happy i bought this for my 8 year old son it casted 3 times an the pickup pins failed would not reel in the line unless you hold line against side of reel so i trashed the reel got a zebco 20/10 an now we fish every weekend without any problems June 7, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by pole problems I have purchased Shakespeare products for years, this time the pole snapped on it's first cast! My son and his buddies tossed it in garbage so I couldn't return it for repair! I moved reel to ugly stick pole and it worked perfectly. I know it would cost me $8 and shipping for replacement, hardly worth the effort if replacement is same quality May 29, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Big Surprise I bought it and when out 5 times and never had a problem with it. The other day I caught a 5lber with as well as sun fish. Time will tell if it will last , but never had a problem yet. April 28, 2011

How large is tis reel? Is it bulky and heavy? I am looking for a decent spinning combo for my 7 y/o son. I wasn't sure if this combo was too large and heavy for him to fish with comfortably.

Reel is not suited for small hands, the reel's big. The Push button needs considerable force to use.

The reel weighs 10.4 oz. This combo would be fine for a seven year old, but if you have reservations you may take a look at our selection of kid rod and reel combos. Try a product search for “kid combo” to see if there’s a better fit for your child.
