Rated 4 out of 5 by Strong, smooth reel Although I have yet to catch any fish with it, this reel casts well and is pretty mechanically sound. Not a lot of play in the gears.I have used it delta, river and saltwater fishing rigging for striper, ling and salmon. It is rather large, but I got it in a combo so the rod was a good fit. Had to return the first one because the mount was broken. No issues with the replacement, though. November 22, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Discription could be better The reel seemed nice enough when I pulled it out of the box, but was to big to attach to the seat on my rod. My rod is a heavy rod, granted it is a freshwater rod (reading description again it says saltwater in it, but the reel is in the freshwater section?) and I had figured that it would fit. It would have been nice if that had been included in the description, or at least something to indicate that may be a problem. Overall it seemed like a decent reel for the price point, however while toying with it before failing to attach it to my reel, I was not 'wowed' by it. There are better reels for less money or just a few dollars more IMO. I gave it one star since I couldn't use it and also because there was nothing about it that made want to buy another one should I have a rod that it would fit. August 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great reel for big cats I admit I was skeptical at the price for such a large reel. I bought the A180B and spooled it with 20 lb Stren Magnaflex I had and put it on my Okuma 15 foot surf rod for big cats in the Missouri River. This thing cast extremely well using 10 oz of weight. I had expected it to not keep up but it did very well. I also have the Catmaxx 80 reel and this is about the same size. It handled well on large fish up in the 30 lb range. I am going to buy more. The antireverse is rock solid and there is no play in the reel handle which is a great plus when fighting large fish. August 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Shakespeare Alpha=Strong! Sometime in October, I caught a 4lb channel catfish-no problem. The reel is a very strong reel that I use for channel cats that range everywhere from 1-15lbs. I think it is one of the best channel catfish reels for the price! January 2, 2013
