If you want to use exceptionally dirty water. I suggest you prefilter the water through a t-shirt or some cloth.
Even with very high particulate /turbid water you should get 5 to 10 gallons through the filter. The Filter's flow will start to slow down after use; this is normal. The quality of the water will greatly determine when this will happen. To extend the life of the Filter, periodical back washing is REQUIRED. http://www.sawyer.com/research/Sawy...
