The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger Personal Tracker utilizes GPS technology to keep your friends and family up-to-date on your status when you’re in the wild, and in worst case scenarios, alert the authorities when you need urgent help. The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger Personal Tracker comes complete with buttons for check-in, tracking, Alert SOS, Ask For Help, and a message button (non-urgent messages). If there is no GPS fit, SPOT sends a distress signal without the GPS signal to emergency response center. Features safety flaps over the 911 and help buttons, illuminated buttons, a sent message light, and a soft neoprene case.
Ask for help: Request help from friends and family every five minutes for one hour.
Check in: Let contacts know where you are and that you're okay.
Message button: Custom create non-urgent message to send to friends and family.
Track progress: Acquires your GPS location every ten minutes for 24 hours. Sends each location one time. Previous two track points send with current track points send with current track point helps ensure consistent recording of movements.
Alert SOS: Alert emergency assistance request with your exact location to GEOS every five minutes up to 4.7 days.

I purchased one of these 2 years ago at my wifes insistance because I was going hunting in the mountains of Colorado during the late season when very few hunters were out in my area. It got her off my back and gave us both peace of mind for two hunt seasons. This year when I tried to turn it on to test it before heading out, it would not turn on. After replacing the batteries and double checking that the batteries were the correct ones, actually good, and installed properly, still nothing. When I called the company I was told that my only option was to buy another one. The annual service fee is bad enough but to have to buy a new one every two years because of poor quality is too much. I would not recommend this to any one that is not going to use it daily. That way when it fails you get a free replacement. (probably after you pay shipping and a month turn around time.) I would think that for the cost of the annual fee they would give you a free one.

I am a contract logger, and bought the SPOT device for emergency communications when I am logging in remote areas.
I have to say, I had high expectations for the device, given that it is a satellite-based device. I thought I could use it anywhere, butin practice this has just proved to be the case.
I bought the device to check in daily with our head office so they knew my status, but the unit has not worked out to be as user friendly or reliable as a I hoped.
For one, as a 1-way device, I never know if the message got through, so in check-in mode, I have been used to sitting around for 20-30 minutes waiting for the signal to get through. However, as a 1 way device, it just does not seem fair from a customer perspective not to know in any way if the message got through. So, often I wait about 20 min or so in the hopes that my check-in got to the office, but when I am working, 20 min. is a long time to be sitting around waiting for the device to do its job.
Also, I bought the additional trackin for $50, but it seems that only about half of my tracks are getting through, even though I try to position the deivce supine. Again, if the office only knows 50% of the time that my messages got trough, how can they reasonably know where I am at any given time?
Simply put, the unit is not reliable, and I wish there way a 2-way device so that I at least know in the field if my device is wokring or not.

Device worked good in open areas. Did not seem to work at all in heavy tree cover. Purchased the device so I could keep track of my son while he was hiking alone on ApplachainTrail. Got messages at least twice every day - he could find a clearing in the woods that would work. Worked great when he was ready to come out of woods and was two states away and we had to find him. A friend went to pick him up, his cell phone battery was running down and they could not find him. I got them on the phone gave them the last lat and longtuide settings from the Spot messenger and they put those into a vehicle GPS and drove right to his location. Overall pretty good device - wish it worked better in heavy tree cover.

I purchased one for myself & wife, piece of mind for her. While working aboard different vessels and not always having a working phone, I can check in with my wife so that she knows that all is going well, she also knows that if something goes wrong I have a way to call for help. I use it when ever I am out to sea. Also useful when out fishing and I don't have a gps to mark where I am getting bit.

I dont remember,I just paid for it. Go to their website and check. It depends what you would like to do. For me I wanted it to track my treks and for emergency services and online tracking for loved ones and friends to watch online. It depends on how you want to use.
