SPOT Gen3 Satellite GPS Messenger Personal Tracker - Model SPOT-3 5 5 3 3
Life Saver I committed a cardinal sin by planning a week long off road motorcycle trip through the Southwest Desert by myself. My wife convinced me to purchase the "SPOT", just in case, I told her it wasn't necessary. Two days into the ride, thirty miles from civilization I crashed and broke my leg. No way to pickup my bike or crawl out so I relied on my SPOT. Within 2 hours I was being helicoptered out to a hospital. Saved my life! December 1, 2014
A must pack item for me I bought the SPOT in 2013 for tracking progress while riding in the Tour Divide, a ultra distance mtb race from Banff Canada to the Mexican Border. Family and friends can watch racers' progress throughout the days. I used the SPOT again in 2014 and will definitely use it in 2015. In addition to the tracking, I've had the opportunity to use the SOS button. In the middle of the Great Divide Basin, a massive desert area in Wyoming, I encountered another cyclist who had 'hooked' his front wheel in loose sand, crashed and broke his hip. When I came across him, he'd been laying in the road for 2 hrs. I used my SPOT SOS button and had a sheriff there in short order then an ambulance not long thereafter. Without the SPOT, it would have been hours until I got somewhere with cell coverage and the downed rider would have been laying in the dirt for quite a few more hours. I've had pretty good connectivity with some understandable lapses; thick forest, slot canyons, and when directly under high tension power lines. Overall, the system works great and I won't go on long rides without. We are going to India on a tour soon and I'm taking the SPOT, mostly for 'fun', so that our friends and family can monitor our progress through the country. December 21, 2014
Bad Start I have used the SPOT 2 for several years, like it and recommend it. I received an email offer to upgrade to Gen 3, and it arrived today. I went to their website to activate my new unit, 1st it did not recognize my ESN number, then it did not recognize my autorization number, then their customer service is closed on the weekend. I am unable to find out their problems with the numbers, and once that is corrected, to find out if they can transfer the contact numbers from my old unit to the new. Poor start for a new unit. A:
NO.
It does not have a display or backtrack that will allow you to return to a pinpoint location.
YOU CAN send a waypoint to your home computer, and use those coordinated to navigate back to that location later.
However, the SPOT units do not have a confirmation (one way signal), so you have no way to confirm that the message was received & forwarded to your computer.
Buy a Garmin with topo maps. You can track your path, flag (pinpoint) locations, and navigate back to those locations at any time.

Every time a message button is pressed it, will send out the message along with the long/lay and day and time stamp to up to 10 emails and phone numbers as well as post it to the subscribers back office to pull up at a later date.

The subscriber determines via a setting on their account just how long messages stay on their account to be able to retain it or at any time they can export the information via CSV or XML file to save for extended periods for future use.
