Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 94 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by 200 SE Sport I mounted this on a Nissan 9.8 hp outboard mounted on a 14' V-hull. The first impression I had was it seemed to quiet the noise at idle. It seemed to muffle the gurgle. The second was at low to moderate speed it significantly improved handling. The turning and maneuverability was vastly more responsive. However I didn't notice an improvement in top-end speed, or fuel economy. As for the planning, a slight improvement. There are 2 things I didn't like. First, drilling holes in my motor. Second, rough water/waves seem to put a lot of strain on the transom. July 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Whats not to like? I was very nervous about installing one of these on my boat, I have a 19 ' Bass Cat that is very fast, but takes too long to get out of the water and falls off plain under 28mph. I have two 14 year old boys that like to wakeboard. I could not tow them with this boat until I installed the SE300. Now the boat nearly jumps out of the water and will stay on plane at a much slower speed. I cannot believe how well it works. The thing that I was most afraid of was loosing top end, didn't happen. What did happen is that at wide open throttle, the ride is a little less scary, because it actually is a little more stable. When you are going down the lake at a fairly high speed, the fin is not in the water, but rather on or just above the surface, which is why it works so well. I don't know about fuel savings like they claim, that's not my kind of boating, but I'm sure that if you were easy on the throttle, this product would help because you plain so much faster with it. Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Product! I have used these in the past with varying results so was hesitant to get one. Have a 17' side console express w 50hp merc. It has a lot of tail weight and the 50 pushes it good,... but works too hard doing it. Lots of nose lift regardless of power trim setting. Porpoising and wave slap on chop. Used the drill type on my 50hp 2 stroke Merc. easy install. I did trim the aft a little to get a more snug fit, but still easy! Tested and totally Awesome product! Hole shot is great! Power Trim means trim now. Cruising and stability at lower speeds. NO LOSS OF TOP END - yet much more stable with actual variance in lift or plow using power trim. Another unexpected feature was the SE 300 acts as a "scoop" or "tunnel" in tilt position in shallow water reducing cavitation and allowing more "push" with a higher tilt than normal. Almost to the point you should watch the water pickup. For duck hunting it will definitely come in handy. Definitely recommend this product for midsize aluminum craft. August 17, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Didn't fit, might with clip, if not, returning 2 Didn't fit the 1977 Mercury 1150. The holes that are there with the doel fin I have (stingray? by attwood) are too far forward. It MIGHT fit with the clip, but the clip doesn't look any bigger, so it seems to be for newer smaller lower units... /shrug I would try the clip, but then I'll just be returning 2 things if it doesn't extend the good 8" more for the length of the lower unit leg.. Actually all three models, the 200, 300,400 will fit nicely and work on the Mariner 125HP.

However, the 300 (for drilling the cavitation plate) or the 400 for not drilling, are the best choices.

SE SPORT 300

All sizes that have a cavitation plate larger than 5 inches wide, usually 40 horse power and up. Because the mounting holes on the SE Sport 300 are 4 inches apart, right to left (center to center), a 5 inch or smaller cavitation plate leaves less than ½ inch of metal from hole to the edge of the plate. The SE Sport 200 is recommended for cavitation plates 5 inches or less.

SE SPORT 200
Smaller 200 model is recommended for outboards from 8-40 HP. It will fit all outboards and sterndrives larger than 40 HP except Mercury 40, 50, and 60 four strokes. There are some smaller outboards (down to 4 HP) that it will fit as well.

I have a 12-ft aluminum boat (Klamath) with a 2007 8hp Mercury outboard.

The cavitation plate is only 4-inches wide.

1. Will the hydrofoil increase the performance of this combination boat/motor?

2. Will the hydrofoil 'fit' on this narrow cavitation plate?

Yes. Prop cavitation/ventilation where the propeller takes in air on turns is damaging to your motor and lower unit. The crescent-shaped of the SE Sport helps to hold water more firmly around the prop. SE200 fits 8 hp motors.

Just slide it to the rear until it fits flush without sliding up on the ramp. Drill the holes and mount it!
Works great!

Yes! I have one on my 60 hp mercury for my Basstracker Pro-team 185. It planes faster and gave me 4 MPH at the top end. Worth every penny. I get better gas mileage too. Also helps with boat control and pulling a tube.

Yes, per SE Sport: Independent tests have shown the SE Sport to be the fastest foil on the market. Trailer Boats Magazine rates the SE Sport fastest in 0 to 30 and top end speed, and Bass and Walleye Boats Magazine rates SE Sport fastest in top end speed. Because of increased stability, speeds higher than the boat's regular top speed are sometimes experienced (as was recorded in the Bass and Walleye Boats test). A very slight drop or no loss in top speed is more likely.

Yes it does, you should be able to adjust it to completely eliminate cavitation. This of course also depends on the condition of your hull and proper mounting height of the motor or drive.

This adjustment that can be done that is not in the installation instructions is to make slight adjustments to the angle of the foil. I did this by adding a stainless flat washer or two between the foil and the cavitation plate. This is at the two front bolts that hold the foil to the plate. Longer stainless bolts may be needed to allow these bolts to properly thread through the locking portion of the nut without over tightening. That very small difference of the thickness of the washer can and will make big performance changes to your boat. Do not eliminate the soft flat washers that came with the foil and otherwise follow the mounting instructions that came with the foil.

I have fine turned the foil angle with great success on a 16' runabout 110 HP and on a 14' aluminum fishing boat 25 HP.

This is referring to a foil that is bolted to the plate without the use of the optional "clip" mounting adapter.

"Will it help with prop cavitation?"

Yes. Prop cavitation/ventilation where the propeller takes in air on turns is damaging to your motor and lower unit. The crescent-shaped of the SE Sport helps to hold water more firmly around the prop than any other foil on the market.

A:
In most if not all situations NO. I bought a used 110 HP motor that had holes in it for a Stingray foil. As much as I hated to drill more holes in my motor. I had to for the mounting of the SE foil.

This never caused problems later.

Instead of a foil the best sulution to the problems that a foil might solve is to use automatic trim tabs. The foils are best when you have a hull design that will not allow the installation of trim tabs.
