Glad I selected American over Brazillian My wife and I discussed for some time for a home defense weapon. We have been looking at Taurus and when BP had their big pre Black Friday Sale. We saw the Taurus on sale but the American made Remington also in the ad. So I decided to look into the Remington R1. Being an old Army Sergeant the Remington looked like the old Army friend we had before it was replaced by the whimpy Beretta. After reading stellar reviews of the R1 and finding out all the rebates and perks from purchasing it, it was a steal. Shoots good, especially, after I GI'd it and gave it a good oiling, just like my armorer in the Army taught us. Keeping the innards wet is the secret, makes cleaning easier and the weapon reliable. Great Purchase Is my first 1911. Have a S&W .40 and it doesn't even compare to the 1911. Fell in love with it after the first clip. The grouping was excellent. The trigger pull was very easy, which didn't make me pull her offline. The recovery from recoil was wonderful. I was able to fire prettily rapidly and still stay on target. Had 1 jam which was pretty easy to clear and know can happen from time to time, but overall is a wonderful functioning gun and would absolutely recommend it for the price. Would post a pic of my first grouping if possible, but trust me, was very tight at about 12 yards. Is excellent. November 18, 2014
A great first 911 i just purchased this pistol.if anyone is buying their ist 1911 this is it. i own 3 others but this one tops them all. great trigger pull and although it has fixed sights the white dots on them are very pronounced. very accurate. shot very good groups at 50 ft right out of the box. if you can afford it at $699.00 ..buy it!! 1 of the best 1911's This is a truly tough gun. I carry it everyday in a nylon belt holster on my side. Been through brush while hunting. Was under water for almost 4 hours on a canoe trip when I got caught up on a log jam and lost the boat. Out of curiosity, I shot a full mag just to see what would happen. Not a single hiccup. Would definitely trust my life as well as my families with it. March 8, 2014

I am also a lefty, years of using right handed small arms in the military hasn't been much of a problem especially
with this gun. But if you would like an ambi thumb safety can be fitted to this weapon. Other R1 models come with the ambi safety.

I am also left handed, but fire right handed, so not sure, but seems you could reach the safety with your left index finger or maybe your left thumb. Might be a little awkward though.

Some handguns come with an either/or safety. The ones that don't must either be sent to a gunsmith, do a DIY job transferring the safety latch from one side to the other, or learn to live with it.

I'm sorry there isn't an easier/better answer.
