The Remington® Model 1911 R1™ Semi-Auto Pistol is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic handgun based on the John M. Browning designed M1911. The Remington R1 is a blend of modern steel machined to ultra-tight tolerances and an iconic design, proven in combat for over a century. A carbon steel frame and slide, with a match grade, stainless steel barrel and bushing give you strength, reliability, and accuracy. Remington has kept many of the original features of the M1911, including a spur hammer, flat main spring housing, and a standard grip safety and safety lock. The spur hammer with the original grip safety allows the shooter better access to cocking the pistol by reaching up with the thumb. Enhanced features of the R1 include a satin black oxide finish, a flared and lowered ejection port, a crisp, 3-1/2 to 5 lb. aluminum trigger, and checkered walnut grip panels. Both the front and rear sights of the Remington Model 1911 R1 Semi-Auto Pistol are dovetailed, and can be adjusted for windage or replaced with aftermarket 1911 sights. Comes with two 7-round magazines. Made in USA.

great pistol about 200 rounds so far, not one hiccup.. Bass Pro did not have the stainless version, the R1S, so i bought one that my LGS had in stock. i might still purchase a few WC magazines for it, just to be safe, but the stock mags look great, seem to work fine. this is a great 1911. very accurate, reliable. nice trigger. a very pretty pistol, as well. Glad I selected American over Brazillian My wife and I discussed for some time for a home defense weapon. We have been looking at Taurus and when BP had their big pre Black Friday Sale. We saw the Taurus on sale but the American made Remington also in the ad. So I decided to look into the Remington R1. Being an old Army Sergeant the Remington looked like the old Army friend we had before it was replaced by the whimpy Beretta. After reading stellar reviews of the R1 and finding out all the rebates and perks from purchasing it, it was a steal. Shoots good, especially, after I GI'd it and gave it a good oiling, just like my armorer in the Army taught us. Keeping the innards wet is the secret, makes cleaning easier and the weapon reliable. Fantastic I have put over 500 rounds through this gun in a few days. It's very easy to clean and no problems with the extended clips. I was hitting targets 25-40 yards easy every time. This is a great home defense weapon with enough stopping power to keep anyone safe. The kickback does take some practice to adjust to so make sure you practice. January 12, 2013
Great Purchase Is my first 1911. Have a S&W .40 and it doesn't even compare to the 1911. Fell in love with it after the first clip. The grouping was excellent. The trigger pull was very easy, which didn't make me pull her offline. The recovery from recoil was wonderful. I was able to fire prettily rapidly and still stay on target. Had 1 jam which was pretty easy to clear and know can happen from time to time, but overall is a wonderful functioning gun and would absolutely recommend it for the price. Would post a pic of my first grouping if possible, but trust me, was very tight at about 12 yards. Is excellent. November 18, 2014

I am also a lefty, years of using right handed small arms in the military hasn't been much of a problem especially
with this gun. But if you would like an ambi thumb safety can be fitted to this weapon. Other R1 models come with the ambi safety.

I am also left handed, but fire right handed, so not sure, but seems you could reach the safety with your left index finger or maybe your left thumb. Might be a little awkward though.

Some handguns come with an either/or safety. The ones that don't must either be sent to a gunsmith, do a DIY job transferring the safety latch from one side to the other, or learn to live with it.

I'm sorry there isn't an easier/better answer.
