Remington® Model 597™ Rifle
Darn good 22 if you ask me
I just bought this neat lil rifle and i have to say i will never regret it, it performs well, i ran a brick of xpert hv winchesters through it without any jams,no failure to feed.its an all around great rifle,and theres an AR conversion kit for it(archangel 597), and hey who said you cant use a 22 for home defense buy the 30 round remington magazine and tell me you dont have enough fire power to stop an intruder.no one wants to get shot no matter the size of the bullet.

Best Clip Fed .22LR
I own this rifle and a Ruger 10/22. The 597 is the better rifle - hands down. I'll give you several reasons why:
* Last round bolt hold-open - more useful than you think.
* Adult sized stock with 14" pull.
* Superior ramp sights to the 10-22's Buckhorns
* Sights are adjustable with a screwdriver & Allen wrench (the 10/22 takes a hammer & drift punch).
* Better sight picture.
* More accurate in my hands.
* Better trigger break.
* Shoots any .22lr that's 1200fps+.
* Handles extented shooting better than the 10/22 (200+ rounds without cleaning)
* Clip ejects crisper (in any position) than the 10/22.
TIP - People that complain about jamming/missfeeds have over-tightened the bolt guide-rails and forced them out of alignment, or, didn't clean their new rifle before going to the range, or, shoot sub-sonic ammo.
Yes, you can customize the 10/22 until the cows come home. So what. I need a .22 that functions well out-of-the-box, not after $500 in mods.
After you clean it a couple of times, you'll see that it's as easy to clean as any .22 out there.

Great accurate reliable rifle.
This rifle is great. I had to install a few aftermarket items to make it more reliable but those were easy and cheap upgrades. Shoots subsonics like a champ after break in.
First of all. Don't over tighten the guide rods. They bend when they are too tight and cause the bolt not to be aligned and be pinched.
2 Changed the extractor, Although the one installed is fine. I had issues with subsonic rounds so I changed it. Now brass is thrown several yards.
3 Changed the hammer. This reduced the trigger weight by almost half.
New magazines have a circle 10 and those are the best.
All this was about $40 after shipping. Although after the upgrades, this rifle is still cheaper than the competition. The 10/22.
Out of this box, this standard rifle will out-shoot any 10/22 under $500. I love the ruger.. but the cheap plating on the receiver and the barrel, the short stock ment for little girls is not a good fitting rifle for me or any person over 5'2

Bought 2 and Disappointed
Bought 2 - 597's as first 22s for my two boys. Decided on the 597s because of positive reviews on out of the box accuracy.
Long story short, very disappointed in the accuracy of both. After many trips to the range testing multiple brands of ammo, I wouldn't trust trying to hitting a squirrel without fear of wounding and losing. Changed mounts to Weaver style and tried different scopes hoping to improve accuracy. After many attempts, even the best group with the 597 doesn't come close to what I would call acceptable or come close to other 22s owned.
Did jam but didn't pay attention if it was a particular brand of ammo that jammed or if it was across the board.
