It is a great rifle that's a fact!! The bolt is a little hard at first but brake it in and oil it right it will work just fine. A huge kick but its a huge bullet. Also the scope is pretty good for a combo! Great great buy for sure!!!

rifle is great but if you can't handle recoil, get a 243 or 270... used dad's 270 modle 700 to kiil a doe, then i sighted this in a week later and got majorly scoped. a scope with a longer eye relief would be a great replacement. other than that, the bolt is a little hard to work, but some oil in the right place fixed that. Great gun from cyotes to moose or elk.(i hunted in the rain for 4 hours one day and the gun worked flawlessly

I've deer hunted for the past 5 years, looking at these reviews I hear this gun comes with a "big kick". Deer hunting I've only shot a 12 gauge shotgun along with a few .22 rifles and 9mm handguns. Comparing kick power to a 12 gauge is the kick higher, lower, or about the same?
I've used many different guns/cartridges over the years but I would go with a .30-06 as being a good all-around cartridge. It comes in a wide range of bullet weights/designs and isn't as hard on your wallet as other cartridges. Just my 2 cents. As far as the rifle, go with you feel most comfortable with. I lean toward bolt-actons.
a 12 year old could, but unless he is going to use it for large elk at long range a 30-06 or .308 would be a better choice. if he is going to use it for white tail a .270 or 25-06 would be even better. a .300 win mag might have too much kick for a 12 year old making him unsure bout shooting it and thus loosing accuracy. hope this helped
