First let me say I am a true fan of Quantum rods and reels. I believe the Quantum KVD Signature Series high speed reel I have cast very smooth and I have not seen any slipping on larger fish I have caught using the reel. It is light weight, not as light as my Quantum EXO PT baitcast reel; however, in comparison to other baitcast reels, it allows you to cast all day long without feeling tired from holding a heavy rod and reel. I would recommend one to others looking for a nice, smooth, quality baitcast reel for just over $100.00.

this was actualy my first good bait caster i loaded it up with 20 lb spider wire and put it on a 6' 9" abu garcia vendetta medium action rod and it works like a champ very tip top quality

before my reel melted it was great it preformed well but the i decide its time to clean it up i used liquid silicon and it melted the catsing system!

I just purchased this reel today with the KVD signature series rod. It cast great and has a very smooth retrieve. After 2 or 3 cast while turing it i already had a strike and can feel everything in the water. It was 200.00 but it is worth it for the quality. I have other Quantum reels and this one it my best one. Still have alittle fine tuning to do but it is a very good set up

i bought my first KVD reel a few months ago and after awhile the worm gear started to grind and scream so i went back and replaced it not more then a month ago and now this one is doing the same thing. i loved this thing it was so smooth but i am almost heart broken and disappointed

the problem is that the worm gear is loose and can be pull in and out of the reel from day 1. This causes the gears to barely line up which in turn minimizes the contact patch between the gears. That minimal contact leads to gear stripping rather quickly if you catch several bass a day or run heavy buzzbait type lures. Every KVD signature in the store was the same way.

i had the same problem with the first one i bought. i sent it back an they sent me a new one. this one has performed great. my understanding is that the earlier ones have a problem. the newer version does not seem to have the same problem

I don't know what you mean by worm gear, but continue to lubricate the bearings inside the reel with oil. Make Shure that your shaft is very clean. I once got oil on the shaft and it made a screening noise during casting. Clean the shaft as well as excess and old oil (only before applying new oil) with an ear cleanerDetails:

It casts very smooth when your shaft is . Rclean and bearings are lubricated. I like to cast lures above 1/4 oz , no lOwer or else backlashing or a short cast with few brakes are possible. Cast distance will also vary on your rod length, strength, and sensitivity. I prefger a 7 ft rod of medium strenth containing a decent sensitivity to get me a long cast. Remember, a rod with micro guides will be more sensitive!A:

I am running Original Stren Long cast 20-25 lb test for jigs and Texas & 3ft Carolina rig setups. I know its old-school but fishing is about what gets the fish to shore or boat I always say!!!A:

use the recommended pound test. 12-20 pound braid is what is recommended. 20lb spiderwire braid will hold up against the lillypads and brush. my 12lb braid even pulls my boat into the pads pretty far if it gets snagged. its tough stuff!A:
I've used the Spiderwire Stealth braid 50 pound test that is 12 lb test size. I will say that you have to reaaaally tune it. Was kinda disappointed with the casting distance with the braid. I think I'm going to try a different type of braid due to the fact I am getting ready to start doing alot of heavy moss and lilly fishing with frogs. ALSO, some guys say to treat the braided line with a lubricant of some sorts before fishing with it. I got the Kevin Van Dam "Line and Lure" lubricant and I am wondering if that is why I could not get that casting distance I want. I am going to put braided line back on tomorrow without treating it and see if that makes any type of difference in casting. Hope this helps a little.A:

Its a completely different setup all together; this is more of a high quality intermediate level-moderate bass fisherman reel. the kvd pt baitcaster is a high quality, high grade, heavy use bass fisherman reel that is used for competitions and longevity. it is a very high quality reel. I keep reading the term "backlash." Does this mean your line bird's nesting up? There was little in the way of instructions. My reel is lefthanded. I adjusted the drag to 4 as I'm using 14 lb. line, and there's a "sprocket" wheel next to the crank handle. As I tighten that clockwise, the bird's nesting goes away a little but not completely. The line coils up even during casting. The instructions say to adjust the sprocket so that holding the rod at a 45 deg. and releasing the line that the line should go down slowly and stop when hitting the floor. It doesn't. lHelp!Answers

1.)Try 20-25 lb test Stren long cast line. Sounds like your fishing line is to thin man remember you have a great bait caster and not a spinning reel anymore load up some thicker line and less bird nest will occur.2.) You are on the correct path by you knob adjustments on the side of your reel just count 5 seconds rod tip pointed 11 o'clock before your weight/lure touches ground.
3.) Cast at this set up then retract your knob from here accordingly
But you can never get away from casting against the wind you will bird nest majority of the time. Hope this helps Man Fish On!!!!!

Set the dial on the left side (if your reel is the RH Model), to the minimum setting. With the lure that you will be using attached, press the thumb release - then adjust the smaller knob behind the crank handle to where it takes a slight bounce of the lure to cause it to drop. Then re-set the dial on the left to just under maximum. Use a quality line that emphasizes "smoothe casting" - and keep your thumb close to the spool when casting.A:
Okay 1st thing, if this is your 1st baitcaster, they do require some practice and getting used to. Ok now then, you are using the wrong thing to set your reel up. The sprocket, (and I hope your talking about the sprocket looking thing on the handle), is for setting your drag when a fish is on the line. You should be using the small button looking knob with the red Quantum logo on it. Now, the side that has the manaul brake with all the numbers on it, set it to 2. Next, TIGHTEN down the QUANTUM knob. Now the bait should NOT drop when you hit the release button. Next, with the release button still pressed, start moving the QUANTUM knob until the bait starts to drop. You want to get it to where it is a nice and smooth drop. You dont want a SLOOW drop, it should be a nice dROP!!! LOL. Also one other thing, if you are using TOO LIGHT of a lure, you will ALWAYS backlash! Another thing you can do is look up on youtube. Do a search of your reel and also in set up. Or just copy and paste this, KVD SIGNATURE SERIES BAITCaST SETUP. That should find you some good videos to help you out also. First, I usually tighten the breaking system anywhere from 4-6 like you did. For the "sprocket" that you referred to, I always tighten it much farther then how those instructions say. I tighten it so that when I engage the button and swing the rod tip a little, the lure swings down a foot or two. This way, you'll almost never get backlash. Also, when you cast into the wind, you have to tighten it a little more and when you cas with the wind, I listen it a little. The best cure for backlash that I have found overall is KVD line and lure conditioner. Spray it 2 or 3 times on the line every day or so and almost eliminates backlash completely. You can use it on mono, fluoro, and braid. I hope that helps.A:
The dial on the opposite side of reel handle controls the end of the cast, the "sprocket" is the drag, nothing to do with casting, and the smaller, cap looking dial controls the intial cast.Backlashing and bird's nesting are basically the same thing. If you are backlashing as soon as you cast, adust the small knob, if you backlash right before the bait lands, adust the dial.

Baitcasters can be a pain sometime. I think what is happening is you are dealing with the drag and not the break. Since your reel is left handed, the break will be on the right hand side of the reel. Then there will be a smaller knob on the left hand side that will control the speed of the spool. What I do is tighten them all up, hold the rod at a 45 degree angle and loosen them until the bait hits the ground. Then practice with it from there and you can loosen it little by little until you get the maximum distance without the backlash. Remember, with baitcasters, more muscle is not always the best answer. i had the same problem when i first got this reel. You have to take the side plate off and adjust the brakes on the inside since they come a zero stock. The brakes on the outside of the side plate help but to stop getting backlash i would recomend adjusting the inside manual breaks on the spool. Thats what worked for meAnswers

It's worked well for me...I have it paired with a 7' St. Croix Mojo Frog rod and caught plenty of bass in the thick stuff with it last summer. Occasionally the line guide would get full of scum because it's a small guide, but I actually was glad because that kept it out of the reel...A:
This is my "go to" reel for frog and slop fishing. Throw some thick braid on it and you can't go wrong.

Keep the line spooling in the center until the line you have spooled on "levels out", meaning you have filled the valley. I do this by adjusting the drag; when I need the line to "skip" a section, I loosen off the drag and turn the handle unitl the line retreiver is back to where I need it to be. Then I tighten the drag down and reel in more line. Repeat this action until the line you have spooled is even across and then you can spool as normal.A:
The slopes are there to keep the line running on the spool evenly and to add strength to spool itself where needed most. Doesn't affect the action of spool or amount of line it holds. I spool mine with close to 400 yards of 30 lb. test mono.Answers

7' footer nice I don't see why not , I am sure your going to get a nice cast buddy! Use 20-25 pound test will work wonders just try to balance out the weight differential. I easy way to do this is go down to your local Bass pro shop and bring in your reel to the store show it to customer service and you will receive a color tag. Go find your rod and mount it hold the rod and reel with your index finger on the top front mount of reel the rod and reel should balance out like a balance scale and rod with reel mounted should be even or parallel to the floor hope this helps man!!! Not a bad rod, but you can't throw it as far with a shorter rod like that. I suggest maybe a 12 or 13 foot Meathunter rod. You can throw over 100 yards easily with either length rod and a 6 to 8 oz. weight.Details:

Gotta check your weight size as well. Lighter the lure/weight, lighter your line has to be to get decent casting distance as well. With my 14 ft. river rod and 8 oz. weight, I have no problem throwing mine out 125-150 yards from the bank below the dam. All depends on what you use and what you're trying to do with it. If you're using smaller baits/weights/lures, you need to switch to a lighter class reel. This reel is designed for chunking large baits with large weights long distances.A:
Try opening up the reel and give it a good cleaning. Even if it's brand new there may be excess grease on the gears wich oddly enough will cripple your casting distance. I learned this the hard way with my last Quantum reel. Clean all the dirt and grease out and put a small amount of oil on the gears/bearings. This made a huge difference for me when I had this problem.A:
use a hevier weight for hevier line it also depends on the rod you are using. if you are still wanting to cast the same baits use smaller line like 10lb. you should also try to oil the points where the spool touches the reel

If your reel has seen significant use, I would say your problem is the reel needs cleaned. Any build up around the spool and internal parts will cause excessive drag on the spool, slowing it down therefore reducing your distance. Try this; remove the side plate and spray with Reel Magic or KVD Line & Lure conditioner. Spray inside the cover where the magnets are. I dont know how heavy the lures are you are throwing but 3 sounds a little tight on your setting. I usually set mine on 1, Don't be afraid of the line you are using. I have three of these reels and I use 20, 17 and 15 pound floroucarbon without any issues. I also use Reel Magic or KVD Line & Lure conditioner on the lne also, makes the line a little "softer" which might help your distance.A:

Abu Garcia ambassadeur series baitcasters are among my favorite reels to use. Have several different sizes and all perform flawlessly and are of excellent quality. Very easy to use and durable reels. Some of the bass pro series reels I've had excellent luck with, and some are just not very durable, too much plastic inside when should be metal. Depends on what you're trying to do with them. Quantum reels are of excellent quality and durability as well. I'd rank them up there with the Abu Garcia stuff. Haven't had any problems with them at all. Hope this helps.A:

I left quantum for abu and bps reels. Quantum are not durable at all. I would stay far away from them...

Not as smooth as my carbon black. But it is a decent reel. It is a smaller reel than the Bass pro reels that I own. I can feel the difference on the retrieve, but it also $30 less.
