Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazingly Smooth This reel is amazing. Ipersonally own two of them and haven't used them saltwater fishing yet, but as far as pulling in large mouth bass, it works amazing. So smooth and has so much power for a tiny reel. It can basically fit in the palm of you hand and has more power than any other open face reel I have used so far. I would definately recommend this reel to anyone who is an avid freshwater fisherman and I wouldbet it is just as perfect for any saltwater fishing situation. Also, unlike most Casting reels, this reel can cast very light lures with ease and will not bird nest. March 16, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Reel! I've been looking for a saltwater baitcast reel that is lightweight, has a fast retrieve, but is strong enough to bring the big reds, and tough enough to handle day after day on the water, saltwater that is. I got this reel and the next three days I fished it non-stop. I must of caught 40-50 fish including some out of slot redfish and it handled them like a pro. I think it has 17 lbs of drag? But has a fast retrieve. It didn't rats nest once. It is also the most comfortable reel I own, and I own some shimanos, as well as some other quantums but this by far is the best reel I own for inshore. I'm never goin back, I'll get these for everything. Maybe even for deep sea fishing, haha. November 6, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by very smooth reel ive fished with alot of differant baitcasters and i have to say this ranks up their with some of the best.i cant fully judge it yet till i see how long it works as good as it does know. October 21, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by MY BEST BAITCAST REEL EVER. I WOULD HAVE GAVE IT A 5 STAR RATING BUT THE VERY FIRST TIME I RECIEVED MY REEL THE END SIDE OF ONE OF THE KNOBS WERE COMPLETELY CRACKED, RETURNED IT & GOT ANOTHER ONE THROUGH THE MAIL AND SAME THING HAPPENED, BUT NOW TWO KNOBS WERE CRACKED, I LIKED THE REEL SO MUCH, INSTEAD OF RETURNING IT AGAIN I JUST USED GORILLA GLUE TO SEAL THE CRACKED AREA UP. THIS REEL CAST GREAT & THE DRAG WORKS REALLY WELL. A VERY STRONG REEL WITHOUT A DOUBT. I CAUGHT THIS HALIBUT JIGGING WITH 40LB POWER PRO & I BROUGHT THIS FISH IN WITH EASE WITH THIS REEL. Saltwater Resistant?

Details:
In the description it says the reel has a "seven PT bearing system," not "seven PTs bearing system." So are the bearings saltwater corrosion resistant? Thanks

Yes,they are stainless, just make sure to lube them every other trip out, and a rinse whit fresh water as soon as possible after use in salt water.

A:
As far as the Catalyst PT, I own 2 of them personally. I have had no problems with them. I primarily fish fresh/brackish water at least 5 times a month and saltwater 4-6 times a month which is the reason I got the Catalyst. It is a salt water version whih can withstand against the corrosion caused by the salt and the slight salt in the brackish water. If you fish the regular PT version (the freshwater version) every time you go into salt water, you will have to break the reel down and clean it thoroughly. Also, don't take that as you will not have to clean the Cat version either, but not as much.

I contacted Quantum and they said the difference between the reels is the PTs has a coating on the outside, other than the color, they are the same reel inside.

Its an all around great reel dude. You should be fine fishing it inshore. Its six layer salt guard corrosion resistant coating will protect it from salt damage. I use it mostly for Bass but I wouldnt hesitate to take it inshore. Its drag is most definatly capable to pull in big fish.
