I can't get any friction off the slate even after sanding. Barely get any constant sound out of the call.

This call is the best sounding call that I have ever bought. The only reason I did not give it a 5 is because I have not used it on ol tom yet, but I know itll do the job. Cant wait for spring, get yourself one. Ill update to a 5 when I call the first one in!

As I have seen in some reviews the striker used can make a lot of difference in the call working as it should.Another very important point is the striker "pitch" or "angle" in relation to the slate.
Once the correct "pitch" is found ,the perfect yelp can be acheived with a dime sized oval drawn on the slate with the striker.

If your having problems you might wanna get a different striker, the one that comes with it is good but I use an after market H. S. strut striker. Other than that just keep trying different ways of holding it and practice.1 of 1
