Pflueger began in Akron, OH in 1881 as a fishing hook company, and its 130+ year history is rife with true innovation—they engineered and built their first baitcast reel in 1916, so you get nearly a full century of experience with each Pflueger® Patriarch baitcaster. The Patriarch leads Pflueger's family of reels, with lightweight C45 carbon infused Cam-Locking side plates, and a powerful, featherweight carbon fiber handle with EVA knobs. Other benefits include a machined aluminum frame, aircraft aluminum main gear and main shaft, smooth any even carbon fiber drag system, an Ultimate Brake System to perfect your casts, and 10+1 double shielded, stainless steel bearings.

Very Underrated, Great Buy I would say that in the world of casting reels Pflueger is extremely underrated. I have used their spinning reels and love them, and even bought a couple of their spin casters for my kids. When I hit the market for a few new casting reels I did a lot of research online. To my surprise there is very little for Pflueger's line. I knew that I was going to buy a few from different manufacturers. I played it safe with a Shimano and Diawa. For the last one it was either a Lew's or Pflueger. Because of my experience with the spinning and spin casting reels I picked the Patriarch, and I am more than happy I did. I wanted the dual braking system which is why I chose this over the Supreme. Changing the brake settings is extremely easy with the G-Lock side plate, and best of all the side plate does not come completely off. Casting is very smooth, and while it does not cast as far as the Curado I or Tatula I am very pleased with it. The drag is smooth handling a 5 lb largemouth bass with ease and I don't envision needing all 20 lbs of it. The reel feels sturdy in my hands and comfortable. Aesthetically, it is a nice looking reel. It doesn't have all sorts of gimmicks or new innovations, but what it does have is great performance. If you're in the market and thinking about a Pflueger I would highly recommend it. April 13, 2014
Absolute Workhorse I have owned two of these reels (albeit an older model) for five years. I clean them every season and give them fresh oil and grease. I can say from experience (and a lot of it) that these are total power houses. I use them for jigging in slop and mats, and I've NEVER had a fish pull drag on me. The casting is smooth and soft and easy to manipulate for different sizes of baits/lures. I've noticed that they typically don't cast as far as my Quantums, but that's not why I use them, so that's perfectly fine with me. They are my slow, methodical, work-every-inch-of-cover reels, and they perform better than I could ever ask for. I will use these babies until they fall apart in my hands, and then I'll go get more. great buy This reel is very smooth and light weight.Casts like a dream and easy to dial in, no backlashes very minor adjustments for heavy winds (22) mph or less drag is smooth and powerfull. paired this with a pinnacle rod (3.2) ozs. and the weight of this reel (6.3) ozs and you have a light setup, I have reels by themselves that weigh more than this combo. Outstanding reel I have been a fan of Pfluger's Patriarch spinning reels for several years. And when I started looking for a quality bait caster I immediately started looking at Pfluger. I was unable to find the Left hand reel when I started my search, so I held off buying anything new. This year I found the left hand model and ordered it from BP immediately. I just returned from a Florida fishing trip and used my Patriarch extensively...the only adjustment I made was for the weight of my lure, right out of the box and this reel casts like a million bucks. I was very, very impressed with the smoothness and extreme distances I was getting. Like the Patriarch Spinning reels their Patriarch casting reels are first rate. So happy with the purchase, I'll be getting me another for my Canadian trip later this year. February 23, 2014

Great reel both are great reels. This would be a bit tricky to answer since each person has his or her own personal favorite. I would recommend trying both out and send the one you do not like back for a refund. Thank you!

Not sure if I bought a bad STX or not, but I absolutely love the Patriarch and returned the STX.

I have Pflugers, Abus, and Quantums. I love them all, but the Abu Revo STX is a bulldog! It holds up year after year for me. Best reel for under $200 bucks!

I will qualify my answer by saying it might be personal taste but I like this reel much better. I was a bit disappointed with my Revo, so much so I gave the Revo to a friend. I am going to buy another Pflueger today. I cannot vouch for the reel's longevity as I have just started using it, but it lasted a week in Florida without the slightest hiccup.
