Pflueger began in Akron, OH in 1881 as a fishing hook company, and its 130+ year history is rife with true innovation—they engineered and built their first baitcast reel in 1916, so you get nearly a full century of experience with each Pflueger® Patriarch baitcaster. The Patriarch leads Pflueger's family of reels, with lightweight C45 carbon infused Cam-Locking side plates, and a powerful, featherweight carbon fiber handle with EVA knobs. Other benefits include a machined aluminum frame, aircraft aluminum main gear and main shaft, smooth any even carbon fiber drag system, an Ultimate Brake System to perfect your casts, and 10+1 double shielded, stainless steel bearings.

Solid Reel, mediocre casting distance The build quality is top notch, can't figure out why it doesn't cast as far as my Abu or Quantums? I will look into getting boca bearings installed. Love the quality of the reel, the castability is a killer for me. I cast a mile with other reels, this one casts noticeably shorter in distance. I guess that makes it fine for flipping but eliminates other fishing techniques that require longer casts. August 25, 2014
Wonderful thing of beauty. It astounds me how underrated this reel is. I did a lot of research around for a good reel to get into baitcasting after years of using spinning reels and this one seemed to have everything I would want for far less than other reels I was considering. When I got the package I was blown away at how nice it looked. After I was done looking over it I was just hoping it would fish as good as it looked. I paired it up with a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth and my word this thing is light! The Fenwick Rod almost seems designed for it. What was interesting was on Fenwicks facebook page they have a pic of them using this combination. Back to the reel.... it is light, so comfortable and easy to set up. Its hard to take your eyes off it for a bit as it is that nice looking. After a few casts you can tell the quality of the reel. Sooo smooth and as long as you have it set up correctly it will stay that way. If anyone was considering baitcasting this is a reel I would recommend to learn on. Its very forgiving and just feels like the business. I was only miffed it did not come with a reel cover like the previous Patriarch. Pflueger remedied that quickly sending me one in the mail after I asked if it was supposed to include one. It was not but they sent it to me anyways no charge whatsoever. Just was nice to have so many things start on the right foot with my first pflueger product. The previous reviewer was right, you would be short changing yourself not to look into one of these. Tight lines! August 5, 2014
Massively exceeded my expectations After much research and deliberation I purchased this reel over the abu revo stx and shimano chronarch, which was very unexpected because I have been an abu garcia fan all my life and typically associated the pflueger name with entry level reels (I know they are both pure fishing brothers).  That misconception has been shattered to say the least, you need to put your hands on this thing to understand the quality. One of the best features is that the side panel is fixed to the reel for adjusting the centrifugal brake, you flip a tab rotate a small turn and the hinged side pops loose. What this means is that you are not fumbling with a screw and then separating your reel into two pieces...which always calls forth images of half my reel at the bottom of the lake. I have logged about ten hours with the reel so far and have had zero issues, zero noise/rattle when spooled and under load, and wonderful fill up your palm comfort. The reel itself is lighter than the abu/shimano offerings at this price point, but has absolutely no flex when you are fighting fish.  It is a little wider than some of the competition which is nice if you have bigger hands because your fingers can comfortably sit on the blank and not mashed under, curled around, or awkwadly in front of the gear box. I also notice that on my veritas rod the gear box is actually level with the rod this was a happy, comfortable surprise.  Time will tell how this holds up but the drag performed smooth and strong, the Eva grips are exceedingly comfortable. So far I am the happiest of campers. One knock I have found is that the face does not cover the line guide well as it tracks back and forth due to the tapered shape.  It does not interfere I just think it could, at some odd angles, rest on the line guide if it were at the far right or far left positions rather than the frame if it were set down.  I would not want to let this rest anywhere other than my hands without a thick neoprene cover because of this fact. Also not pictured, noted anywhere is the fact that this reel DOES have a grease port underneath the main gear housing for quick lubing if necessary. Check this out for sure before purchasing a chronarch/revo, informed consumers are wise consumers. The components are high quality and this thing beats the heck out of both aesthetically. Absolute Workhorse I have owned two of these reels (albeit an older model) for five years. I clean them every season and give them fresh oil and grease. I can say from experience (and a lot of it) that these are total power houses. I use them for jigging in slop and mats, and I've NEVER had a fish pull drag on me. The casting is smooth and soft and easy to manipulate for different sizes of baits/lures. I've noticed that they typically don't cast as far as my Quantums, but that's not why I use them, so that's perfectly fine with me. They are my slow, methodical, work-every-inch-of-cover reels, and they perform better than I could ever ask for. I will use these babies until they fall apart in my hands, and then I'll go get more. Great reel both are great reels. This would be a bit tricky to answer since each person has his or her own personal favorite. I would recommend trying both out and send the one you do not like back for a refund. Thank you!

I have Pflugers, Abus, and Quantums. I love them all, but the Abu Revo STX is a bulldog! It holds up year after year for me. Best reel for under $200 bucks!

I will qualify my answer by saying it might be personal taste but I like this reel much better. I was a bit disappointed with my Revo, so much so I gave the Revo to a friend. I am going to buy another Pflueger today. I cannot vouch for the reel's longevity as I have just started using it, but it lasted a week in Florida without the slightest hiccup.
