I live in San Diego, and I am looking for a heavier set up to fly line live bait and target large Calico Bass, Halibut and Yellowtail. I'd be fishing in and around kelp beds with 30-50lb braid. Would this be a better choice over the Daiwa Saltist Black Gold 35, and why/ why not?

For continuous cranking from bottom with braid , your question really is , which reel will last the test of serious use , not occasional use . The Senators are a great grouper reel in florida as well as Halibut reel off Oregon and Alaska . I dont know about the Daiwa your talking about . Id go to tackle store that has them and set them side by side and physically compare them and prices . warranties ? Calicos can get very big and fight hard , its better to have a workhorse in your situation , than a pretty reel , because a pretty reel wont last long , it has to have the guts to do the job repeatedly
