I must have 25 to 30 penn reels. They are both fresh and salt water reels and I have yet to destroy one of them. Some of the penn's are 30 years old and what I love is I can still get parts for them. They will be turned over one day to my son and grandchildren. The SSM looks to be the same quality as the old Penns. It cast great and fights the stripers and bluefish well.

I purchased an 850 and matched it with a 12' Ugly Stick big water for surf fishing and I can lob 5 oz weights and cutbait a mile. I would highly recommend this product. Best value for a solid metal reel with a strong reliable drag system. I plan on buying a smaller model for inshore applications...

Really awesome reel. Almost took the fun out of reeling in the big one. I pulled in a 25lb sting ray with no problem.

Why are drags on Penn 750SS capable of handling 20+ lb line listed as having only 11 lbs of drag, where comparable Shimano's have 3 times the drag. Is it a difference in the way it is measured? If not, this is not the reel to pull big fish out of structure.
Thanks

the penn 750 ss is a great reel its been proven to pull in over hundred lbs fish if you need a drag thats more then twenty you dont need to fish lol i have caught 55 lb tuna with this reel and with the drag only set on 8 and there fast swimmers but i would recamend 20 lb line that real is designed for 50 braidDetails:Â
The description of this reel states it has the HT-100 drag but all the images show Penn Power Drag logo on the spool, (which is not nearly as smooth)Can anyone confirm this?
In my mind this is a deal breaker. The Battle and Conquer that the guides I know use have held up well and I can personally attest to the quality of the HT-100 drag. Penn Power drag is not nearly as smooth.
Is this a misprint? If so it should be changed ASAP.

I want to purchase this reel to pair with a 10 ft rod for surf fishing (Trout and reds mostly) Should I go with the 750 or 850. I don't want to buy the wrong size and wind up getting both. I would trust the 750 but I want to be able to handle anything the surf throws at me... What are the disadvantages of having a reel that is too big for a normal day of fishing for me? Thanks!Answers
A:Â
go 750 if youre using braid....I have the 850 and can fit 300 yards of 50lb braid AFTER backing 1/2 the spool with 50lb mono...The 850 is heavey and can be tiring to cast over and over again...personally though, I would look elsewhere if you are going to be casting any heavy gear....lots of problems with bail closures/breakoffs during the cast..A:Â
I really like the 750 from trout to kings to cobia. I think it will be plenty big enough.A:Â
750 and 850 are alomost the same reel. 850 have a larger capacity spool. I would get the 850 and load 30-60 lb braid line. Anything bigger than 60 I would get a conventional style reel.Details:Â
I have two 750SSm reels on 10ft surf rods and have been pleased. I need two more reels for similar set-up (maybe 11ft rods). Is there any reason that I should consider the Slammer? American made is a plus. Where are they made?Answers
A:Â
I would get 12'-20' surf rods, with 950ssm reel up to 14' rod. Anything longer I would use a conventional reel.A:Â
get the slammer its a lot better but not to sure where they are made.Details:Â

Can the Penn 750ssm handle King mackeral, Mahi, and medium size sharks (4-7 ft)???Answers
A:Â
Oh yeah definatly I have the 650 and I catch 200-400# hammerheads and tigers easily off of oil rigs.A:Â
Yes, I own two 750's and I have caught a few Mac's and some mahi's without any problems. I haven't been shark fishing, so I can't answer for that one.A:Â
go with the 850... same cranking power with higher line capacityA:Â
it can horse those fish in like nothing.Answers
A:Â
I use 15lb mono for kings and 25 for Big Cobia So I think I would go with 15-25 lb test just for long runs and line capacity.Q:Â
