I picked up a 430 ssg as an ultra-light saltwater reel for stalking the flats and the surf. I wanted an inexpensive and durable reel that can withstand a dunk or two and survive. Loaded with 200 yards of 20lb braid this reel can do just that.
PROS: Built like a tank, takes a lot of abuse, relatively inexpensive
CONS: The drag system is still antiquated and the tension knob does not have the more precise click adjustments of other reels (Penn Battle, Penn Conquer, Shimano's Stradic, Saros, and Spheros).
It is not very smooth
It still wobbles
It is no longer American made.
BUT...it is what it is and it is still a decent workhorse. If you are going to be hard on your gear get a Penn. If you aren't going to occasionally dunk your reel in saltwater or you want a faster, lighter, and smoother reel get a decent Shimano.

I love this reel! I have the 550 (on a 11 ft surf rod) for a couple of years now and it still looks and works like the day I bought it! I also have an 850 (on a 12 ft surf rod) that has surpassed my expectations. I have not had a minute's trouble with either; I will buy more Penn reels.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by ddeeeerr15 great great buy
This is an incredible reel. I have had the 440 for 3 years now and it feels like I have just taken it out of the box. The drag is very smooth when being screamed out by big reds and sharks. Great buy

I bought this reel in the 440 and 450 sizes two years ago. The 440 is on a 7' ugly stik lite medium actionand the 450 is on a 7' ugly stik heavy action. I use them both off my boat and on my kayak. Right after I bought them, I went out to Taylor's creek in Beaufort, NC and was going to do some fishing out of my kayak. I took the rod with my 440. I ended up flipping my kayak over, lost a lot of lures, but I had a rod float on my fishing rod. When I got the kayak flipped back over, I located the rod and brought it back on board. No bait, so I just paddled for a couple hours then met the in-laws and changed and went to dinner. When I got home that night, it was 8 hours later. The reel still turned ok but it was a little gritty, I gave it a freshwater rinse, took off the spool, handle, and side plate, greased and oiled everything with some quantum hot sauce and put it back together. That rod caught me another 30 blue fish from the pier a year later and it worked like new and reeled as smooth as it was out of the box! Very impressed that a reel could be under saltwater for 30 minutes, spend 8 hours with the saltwater still on it, and then come out that smooth, like nothing had ever happened. I was sold on Penn from that point on. I now have the 440 and 450 SSG and the Sargus 3000 and 4000. Wouldn't trade them for any other brand. I don't see myself going back to quantums or shimano's ever again when I can get this quality from a much better priced reel.

I was wondering about how big this reel is? I am looking to use it for bass fishing, I usually use a real that is lower 8oz. would you say this reel is bigger than other reels? and what other reel would this reel compare to, as far as size? thank-you very muchAnswers

This reel is pretty heavy (as in weight) for bass fishing. What you are getting with that weight is saltwater durability.I would suggest an older version of the Shimano Stradic if you want serious value for your dollar. A 2500 should be fine for bass. The 2500 Saros is another great reel for the price.
The SSG is a pretty compact reel but it is not very smooth and you can find some great reels for similar money that have better attributes. Again, for freshwater reels there are a ton of good options, but if you are planning on using it for very light saltwater applications it should be fine.
I hope this helps

Im looking at the 430ssg, is it smooth enough that it is effortless? thank-youAnswers
A:Â
Definitely not! trust me the drag catches so bad and is to me one of the worst drags ever. Try quantum or shimano. There betterTop 50 Contributor

My initial answer is, no.Compared to my Shimano reels and Penn's Battle and Conquer reels this is not very smooth.
It is not rough or "gritty" but smooth is relative to what you are used to. I can give a hard crank to the handle of my Shimano Saros or Stradic and it spins "effortlessly" after my hand is off the handle.
The SSG will continue to spin after a few cranks, but it does wobble a bit.
I hope this helps

I have the 440 and assuming that each of these reels are the same- only scaled differently- the 430 should be very smooth. My 440 is VERY smooth for a saltwater marketed reel. Hope this helps1 of 1
