Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Rod For the Value I bought the smallest of this combo series a while ago as a light duty inshore combo which would be used for flounder, stripers, and bluefish. Having tangled with all three the rod came out on top. I was really impressed with the heavy duty construction of the reel. It can really take some punishment. Would definitely recommend this rod for beginners getting into light saltwater action. The only negative I'd say, is the rod it comes with. Tough though it is, you can really tell it's cheap. But at the price, what can you expect? March 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Set Up Got the Sargus 4000 combo this past spring and used it nonstop through to the fall. Preformed extremely well in an inshore environment. Perfect for schoolie stripers (14"-30") and small to mid size bluefish. Used 30 lb test Tuf Line braid, one issue is the braid has a tendency to slip on the spool unless you put some electrical tape on first, then no problem. This reel was used very hard and in tough conditions, not treated well at all (getting plunked in saltwater while wading in the middle of a river multiple times) only took a little tuning up to run fine again. Would absolutely recommend to anyone- the slammer rod is fantastic as well, especially for the price.. had no problem pulling in 30" keepers yet still fun fighting 16" schoolies. December 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent combo I bought two of these combos three years ago. One for my wife and one for myself. This combo has a great feel to it. I mostly fish for flounder and have caught many on these rods. I like them so much I recently bought two more while Penn was still putting them out. I have them spooled up with 20lb braid. Excellent for the money too!! August 19, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best rod and reel combo purchase ever I love this rod and reel, had my best weekend fishing this year with my first time using it! August 1, 2011

A:
I own the smallest of the combos, and I've used it as a heavier bass rod. It could definitely handle some larger channel cats as well.

uhm I would have to say no it's not, unless your after 30 + pound fish, it's a heavy action pole, I suppose you could but it would be like using a baseball bat for a pole
